Hi there mate,

Given that your question was ‘which Mac?’ and not ‘Mac or PC?’, I’ll give you my view…

I have a 27" iMac Quadcore and I doubled the standard RAM for good measure. I have not used a Mac Pro, but I had the same challenge when I was buying. I fell on the iMac because:

  • It is, in my opinion, better value for money. Cheaper, and you get almost equivalent performance. If not as powerful, the power is eeeasily enough to handle anything you can throw at it
  • I considered I would be ‘forfeiting’ the ability to upgrade - my view was that I would not need to upgrade any time soon, and the likely bits that might need a buff could be handled with external items, such as an HD’s and soundcards. Think what you might need to upgrade and consider if a Pro would make that any easier
  • It looks and feels beautiful… BEAUTIFUL! Form meets function. It takes pride of place in my room, looks awesome and has a small footprint.

Quite frankly, I am blown away with it. It easily handles my DAW needs - admittedly though I don’t run Logic on it. You may want to check on some other sites - I read loads of threads before making my decision. Try macrumors.com forums for example…

I think it is quite telling that a lot of design companies and studios are now turning to these machines as workstations. I’m no techno-guru, but it feels like the hardware has finally started exceeding what the software can throw at it for a change (especially in the case of the quadcore stuff, which at the time I had bought, had not been exploited to its full potential by software).

I have to caveat this advice, with the fact that I am not a technical expert, just a bloke who wants a computer that works exactly intended. And mine does.

    Jim.

Thanx jim appreciate that  that really helps

    well said

Personally I’m using a Mac Mini 2.0 Ghz processor with 2 Gig Ram which to be fair is quite low buy any standards but it’s still handles anything i throw at it.

    I’m currently using

    Logic 9

    Ableton 8

    Reason 5

    Bias Peak

    NI Komplete 6

    Sylenth

    plus loads more

anything from the new mac range will piss over what i have in terms of processing power, so it should only come down to what your budget can cover because all the new are good enough even the bottom of the range.

Welli just checked a project file in ableton … on my current imac its using 135% of my cpu and on my macbook pro its only using 37% … my macbook pro is only a year old so a new imac should really give me some more umph i recon
