Why are musicians more likely to suffer from depression?

Quite an interesting article

Boredom alert.

Did this Topic in College… Summed it up pretty well for me.

Emile Durkheim - Le Suicide 1897

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_(book)

Amongst other patterns he believed he identified… he said that there were 4 different categories of Suicide.

Egoistic, Altruistic, Anomic & Fatalistic.

The Rock Star, Hotshot Playboy, Person who has it all - type suicide, falls into the Anomic category.

Anomic suicides are the product of moral deregulation and a lack of definition of legitimate aspirations through a restraining social ethic, which could impose meaning and order on the individual conscience.

Durkheim explains that this is a state of moral disorder where man’s desires are limitless and, thus, his disappointments are infinite.

BASICALLY… He thought that the higher people went up the ladder, or further into fame, that more it distanced a person from their cultures morals and accepted behaviour. These things usually keep a persons feet on the ground. In the absence of gravity we float into the abyss. Makes sense.

He also found that if you were married or in a relationship, or had kids… You were less likely to commit suicide.

People on their own, with no “Love” in their lives, would smoke/drink too much & be more melancholy in their outlook etc…

When he studied it back in 1897, no one knew anything about it. There are a few holes in his research, but also some common knowledge too.

I take a different look from that of the Guardian article.

I always thought it was more likely that creatives and emotional thinkers (which creatives usually are) are much more connected to feelings in general, high and low.

Also they are usually more in touch with the great injustices and cruelties of the world, and suffer for it. (scuse the polemic).

Sounds all a bit dramatic, but you know what I mean. Someone who feels compelled to express themselves (through art) must have a pretty big motivation to do so, rather than the accountants of the world who aren’t troubled by such things.

This coupled with success sets it on fire (especially once drugs and booze get involved). That’s the way I see it anyway.
