I don’t really understand the function of the return tracks. Can’t you get the exact same effect by just putting that audio effect on the effects chain?
You use return tracks to blend in the effect (dry/wet) and still keep the dry signal present.
You also use return tracks to add the same effect to multiple tracks at once. For instance, hats, snares, claps, crashes, etc can be given the same reverb with the help of the send/return function.

sending effects to return channels also helps maintain your cpu’s.
well I have i7 overclocked, so thats not really a problem for me

same effect on multiple tracks
Running a quad core i7 Macbook Pro (late 2011 model) and I pretty much always run out of CPU. Only 2Ghz, though. Guess I shoulda got a faster chip.
