Wider mixes

hey guys could we get a tutorial on making the mix sound phat and wide, with a good balanced mixed

A tip I got of someone else on another Forum… is…

Sample Delay.

Apply 100ms of Sample Delay on one side - either Left OR Right - on lets say,. a Busy Hat part or shuffling Cabasa or Percussion pattern…

And you’ll get a fuller, thicker, wider sound.

Works really well on Min/Tech/House… But would sound good probably on anything.

Less is more… Dont use it on everything. I think I’ve heard it used on Bass & FX, but I suppose its all to taste really. I prefer just to have it on Hats mainly. Thats what works best for me.

Logic has an actual Utility called Sample Delay… which does exactly that job! Funny that!

I’m sure that other DAW’s have something similar, or at least an option in the advanced channel strip settings that will let you go in & set the delay on one side.

Yo man, thanks for the idea. I have not tried this yet, but sounds good. Also, thanks for the post, would have never thought to ask this.

This is also a great way to apply stereo width to mono tracks.

yeah these tricks work well and i do use them, but i was meaning more about thickening the final sound if you compare most of the tutorials to released tracks the are very thin sounding and i’ve seen mixing & mastering videos were the guys literally make the track sound 100 times better by adding reverb, compression, eq, limiting, stereo effects & even duplicating parts and only effecting the duplicate audio.

that video was done with rock music though and i would really like to see something aimed at dance music.

lets face it creating, writing, programming, mixing, and mastering are all different things with different skill needed and you can’t really class your self as a producer until you’re at least jack of all these trades.

i have no problems programming my own sounds but i suck at writing, mix downs and mastering.

i would love nothing more that for some one to show me how to get creative with fills and riffs as keeping a track sounding fresh is where i suck the most

Is the ‘Sample Delay’ the same as the ‘Simple Delay’ on Ableton?

I tried it at 100ms on my hats and it sounded too much.

Good tip though, i’m probs just doing it all wrong lol.

some one has shown me how to do a good effect with the Dry hat pattern panned to the right and delayed version to the left and it was all well and good when they showed me it, when i got home and try it, it was a different story lol.

this is why we need the videos lol people like me that have had one to many forgotten nights hehe find it hard to remember what others show me and need the video reference to fall back on.

[p] I wouldnt be a power user in Ableton or anything… so I’m probably missing where the Sample Delay is. I know there is a Sample delay on the tracks… so maybe you could stick a mono had on one… Duplicate it, delay it by 100ms and pan it slightly to the Left or Right.[/p]

[p]I’m on Logic 99.9% of the time… so I dont know if there is a Tool included or not. Simple Delay is just a no frills “normal” delay.[/p]

[p]You might want to check out Voxengo… They have a Sound Delay Plug - Au & VST. I only had a v.quick mess around with it on the Laptop speakers & I think it’ll do the job… Hopefully! LOL

I dont think it lets you go in & select Right or Left on their own - But there are a good few presets with it that you can tweak that have single channel selected. Sounds fine.

To get the effect… you’ll need to stay away from Audio Delay section. Keep it all @ 0. Go to the Sample Delay section. All the Knobs give the delay in MS. 1x goes up to 9ms. 10x goes up to 90ms. 100x goes up to 900ms… So you need to adjust until it sounds right to you.On the very bottom of the plugin screen, you’ll see L + R or L written. This is to do with the channels effected. Change the preset until you get one thats simply L or R & then work away.[/p]

What is the story with this w/site & Paragraphs… Even the [p]'s dont work! :hehe:

Plus I don’t think 's width people are missing in their tracks, as much as **** is Depth their actually loo*** for. Don’t forget front and back along w****h left and right.
