So what do you use?
Both

Well orginally both, but since my speakers don’t work at the moment it’s been headphones.
monitors mainly, hardly use my headphones at all unless checking stuff
Monitors when I can, Headphones when it’s less convenient.
After a long session in the cans, the next time I have it over the monitors, it always sounds loads different, so have to go back and re-mix it.
Wouldn’t bother with the headphones if it was an option.
Monitors when at home and when in the college studio but when in the college mac lab I use my headphones.
Defo both… those HD600s i got are insanely good… you can really hear the intricacies of the mix.
Hey Phil,
What made you go for the HD600’s and not the HD650’s?
I’m looking for a new set of cans.
Cheers.
Apparently they are a flatter response than the 650s… Not as flatering but more precise.
They really show up the details inthe mix.
both but mostly monitors to avoid earache!
i really only use the phones for comparison (and pan) when doing a mixdown

i voted both as like btdj sometimes its just not convenient to have the monitors blasting it out i’ve a few kids of my own and next door has a young kid so i have to be considerate all joking aside though if i had my way it would be monitors all day long lol
Mostly I produce with monitors in my home laptop studio–I have KRK Rokit 5 G2’s that I’m happy with. I find if my stuff sounds good on them then it usually sounds good on all my other audio equipment–like…
- Vintage AR 308 HQ Stereo Speakers (no longer manufactured)
- Sennheiser 280 studio monitor headphones (crisp, but no overtones)
- Monster’s Dr Dre Solo headphones (overly bassy, better than iPhone earbuds)
- Sony V-900 headphones (not stylish, but great overtones, warm)
- JVC earbuds
Sometimes I’ll create tracks in a coffeeshop with my Dr Dre’s, but always remix levels back at home with monitors.
Monitors. I used these crappy in-ear headphones that were like 35 bucks and they gain the sub like crazy so you think your drums are nice and punchy and then you play them in your friends car and it just… dies.
I recently just got Studiophile AV-40 monitors, which are really a blessing. Mixdown on them is really nice, and the track just benefits so much.
phil a friend tells me he reckons his AKG K141s are flatter than the HD600’s bt i aint tried em. have you? what ya think?
