hey guys
i like to produce techno and techno minimal which program do you think its better ableton or cubase?
This has been said by me and many others try them both out as a demo - its not the DAW that makes the music its you - they are only tools and as much as a sculpter may like a certain chisel to produce a masterpiece its the same as a producer to make a killer tune
Hope that helps - oh Ableton user BTW
i would say that ableton is great for every dance music but i also heard that the sound quality is not as good as cubase. so you might want to do some resarch try demos and see what best fit for you . i started to use ableton and its awesome for beat making but i use cubase to process the channels and premastering
What slender said!
I think the sound quality differences are a myth in most DAWs (audio engine, internal plugs may be different) I certainly can’t here the difference between Cubase/Nuende and Ableton.
Try both, however I’d personally recommend Ableton. Not because it’s ‘better’, but because it’s awesome and i used to be a Cubuse user till i used Ableton, i was converted.
However it is horses for courses, some people like driving Fords, others Hondas, and some even Smart cars. What’s the moral here? “Each to their own”.
+1 slender…
In my own experience, i tried cubase before ableton and i prefer ableton. Cubase is a good software but i find ableton more intuitive, easier and powerful. I’m still amazed about all what you can do with…
Most of all, if you’re planning to follow the tutorials here on SA, you should know that most of them are done with Ableton… so, i think it’s the right choice. After all, it is recognized as a fantastic DAW for music creation and live performance… and many professionnal producers use it !
Personally I prefer ableton. Tried them both.
Why ?
Less complicated, it’s way more user friendly and i don’t see any essential sound quality differences between them.
been working with Ableton Live for a few months now & iam blown away by the workflow
& quality that it has…Cubase is definitely alot simpler & its vst instruments / samplers are really good "Cubase SX3 - Cubase 5 …but the interface just sucks ! …it always has
though Ableton Live 8 now has some really awesome instruments which it lacked in previous versions …it has kinda leaped over Cubase & Logic now
but i dont know really! …there just always seems to be something being left out with these music producing software …there is still yet to be something that just does & has it all …of course you will require a heavy duty machine
also something to else consider is ADOBE AUDITION
ADOBE AUDITION rules in sound quality …i mean it just totally blows everyone away
but AUDITION is totally raw !!! …it has no factory VST instruments …it supports all …but ships with none !!! & it only has limited amount of plugins just the regular Reverb, Chorus, Echo, Compressor, Dynamics ect …but really good quality
Sound Booth is also cool to use as a tool to get your tracks as load as possible with out destroying them
There really needs to be a sticky about this. This is getting out of hand.
someone needs to lay down the law
funny - i used ableton before but moved onto cubase 5
i find i am much more satisfied with the songs i create in cubase than i ever was in ableton
i just find the sounds are closer to what i fell they should sound like.
other people seem to be able to get the sounds they want with ableton but nothing i came up with matched what i had been hearing
the stuff im doing in cubase sounds much less “home made”
so it is Thrue ? can you tell the difference when you master in both DAWS?.
i heard that too many times about the quality of sound between DAWS. so i guess is not a myth anymore

…Cubase 5 is pretty awesome if you really get the hang of all the new plug-ins & stuff !!! …& i also solved the interface problem !!! …4 screeens lol
yesterday a bud brought me over a couple of screens he didnt want anymore & so i loaded up Cubase 5…screen1 “Sequencer” … 2 “VST’s” …3 “Mixer” …4 …key / drum & sample editor + beat designer & loop mash … its nice again now !!! lol …
& VariAudio is awesome …very nice how you can convert vocal parts to midi notes on the fly to create fast cool melodies …that match perfectly with the track …its pretty cool !!
I would say cubase definately sounds better, but ableton is way easier to use!

I just finished my quest as to what DAW works for me ! After leaving FL Studio I was on the hunt and tried many DAWS . It came down to Live 8 or Cubase 5 and my mixes where a lot tighter in Cubase 5 so I went with … Cubase 5 :P

This is not meant to offend any of the others guys who have suggested Cubase having better sound quality BTW.
Meh all this stuff about sound quality is kina stupid IMO. I have read a couple of the big threads on other forums about this & I believed there was not much in it. I think it’s the same nonsense when you hear noobs calling other noobs, noobs becuase they use flstudio & that it doesn’t have good “mastering sound”
I think because Ableton is the new reccomended DAW for people starting out now, you will have more new people starting out not knowing how to get the “quality sound” of the pros & blaming it on their DAWs instead of just being a newb.
p.s Did I use the word noob too much?
I want to get a response from the Sonic Academy Guys!
S.a response +1
I used Cubase from '91 when it was a 24 track sequencer, moved to logic in '99 (when it was still emagic). Still to this day miss some of the MIDI porgamming workflows in Cubase. Love logic, to me just feels slightly more quality than the others, and have pretty much for the last 8 years, only really used logic’s own plugins to create music, said for a few synths, but never feel the need to look outside for other VSTs. As for Ableton, to be honest I’m not that fussed on it (controversial on here I know), absolutely brilliant for quickly getting loops and ideas together, but I think that is as far as I go, you seem to get stuck in a loop with Ableton, and loop based production isn’t my thing. It was however, a game changer when launched.
All that said, use whatever you feel comfortable with or lets you produce music in the way you like, there is no ‘best’ out there, they all offer different things. If you like ableton use it, if you like FL studio, use that, it doesn’t matter. In fact to me, it doesn’t matter what synths, eqs and effects you use, if it sounds good - IT SOUNDS GOOD, simple as. Just be creative.
Nothing to see here, move along now please…
