Buzz from KRK Rokit 5s

Hey, i have my krk rokit 5s connected to an m-audio usb fast track, which is connected to my imac… What i find is that as soon as i open safari, ableton, logic etc, a buzz comes from one of the speakers quite audably… very annoying. Ive switched the cable connecters in the back of the speakers around, and that causes the buzz to come through the other speaker… so thankfully it isnt a problem with the rokits… does anyone have any ideas as to what this might be and how to fix it? im hoping it isnt the sound card because i dont want to have to fork out for another but i really want rid of this interference… by the way, could the interference damage the speakers in any way or is it merely just an annoyance?

Thanks

I think they all buzz a little. Just as long as its not during the music.

My Yamaha’s have a little bit of “Air” going though them if they are just switched on… but I dont believe that it is something that is introduced to the sound at all when its playing.

If its during playback… thats a ****ing problem. Never had anything like that using a specific app. Is it something to do with the sample rates of the app’s & card? :w00t:

I did have a problem once when I installed Snow Leopard on my Mac. The Focusrite Software that controls my Soundcard changed some of the settings. Basically I had a Mic plugged in & there was a “Mix” control for the Monitors. Normally the mix would be ZERO - so that I wouldnt hear the Mic Signal - but the upgrade put it to about 40%. Took me a couple of days to figure that out. Very annoying.

really dude? buzzing is ok? cmon man.

If you have buzzing, there is some kind of interference coming. Are you using balanced or unbalanced cables. That might be the problem.

check this first. if this fixes it let us know. otherwise, we will try to fix it from there. process of elimination.

I seen this posted on another forum what might be some help fella.

“I had a lot of noise with my setup, its seems an earth leakage and looking on the mac forums it wasnt just me. I solved it by buying a ground loop isolator and running it between the external soundcard and monitors.”

Nice find dude.

You don’t want that. You wanna rock balanced lines and get yourself a cheap Behringer Hum Destroyer. The sound it probably coming from your power pack. Try unplugging the power to se if that gets rid of the buzz. If it does not then it is not a ground loop issue.

Doesn’t sound like an issue with a ground loop as both speakers would be effected.

Because you can verify both KRK’s work ok and that one of the cables is ok. Swap the good cable so it goes into the other channel on the sound card (left to right or vice versa). If there is no problem its likely to be the other cable, but if there is a problem its likely to be the connection in the back of the sound card.

hope that helps

But I think that we ALL agree that there should be NO hum or buzz, right?

Depending on what level we are talking about, no analog circuit is going to be free from hum!

Maybe wifi is interfering?

Move your sound card in a different place, and try using different USB cable, does it happen when the speakers are plugged directly to Mac or any other device?

i’ve got the same problem, caused by a ground loop. this happens if two devices run in different phase in a power circuit. for me it works e.g. if i disconnect the power adaptor of my laptop. you need like already mentioned something like a di-box or a balanced audio cable (and connector).

peace

Sounds to me like a software issue to me:

“as i open safari, ableton, logic etc, a buzz comes from one of the speakers quite audably”

So am I correct in saying that when these apps are closed the buzz goes away?

PS - I can crack my Rokits 6’s up real loud and I get no buzz whatsoever (using balanced)

yeah change your cables dude, you’ve already answered your own question about whats wrong…

if the sound goes from one speaker to the other when you change the cable over it’s obviously the cable. this could be two or three things

  1. cheap cables
  2. Loose Fitting
  3. cracked cable

which type of cable are you using? posting pictures of the connections at both ends of your setup could help solve problems.
