Dance Music in England

like 90% of tutorials I watch have someone with a british accent, Ive never been to england, but it seems like the scene must be huge there. Is there like a bunch of clubs with big edm shows every night?

Im from Minnesota, which is 8 hours drive north of chicago.  The music scene here is primarly oriented tword hip hop, and indie rock.  I go to almost every dance show and at most im going to only one or two every 2 weeks.  At ‘dance’ clubs they mostly play hip hop =(

Plus im the only person at my school whos into dance music, I feel like England is the mecca and the place to be to make lots of music friends, whats it like???

Well dance music has always been kept on lockdown here in the US.  Most people here don’t know anything about it.  It is not played much on the radio, if at all.  And that is where most people get there exposure to music.  The majority of people i know listen to nothing but the radio.  It’s sad.

Much of the nightclub scene isn’t great either.  The people that go out to the mainstream clubs are mainly there to get drunk or hook up, and not for the music.  There are some clubs that cater to the diehard dance music lovers depending on what city you are in, but unfortunately not many.

When I tell people I listen to dance music I usually get a funny look because it is not considered “real” music here.  And I don’t even try getting into explaining the different genres.  :w00t:

I think dance music is WAY more mainstream in Europe.  There are plenty of people on the forum that live there and I am sure they can tell you all about it.

I think the UK and Europe in general are definately a little bit more open to Dance Music…

Nightclub wise we get quite a lot that play genre’s like House and Trance (not so much Techno though), but RnB still seems to dominate…

But if you do want Dance music we have lots of clubs just for it… Ministry of Sound, Fabric on Saturdays, Cream in Liverpool, etc. etc.

Anyways, its definately more open to Dance Music but people still look at me weird if I tell em the majority of the music I listen to is House music…

You got artists like Swedish House Mafia and David Guetta who make Dance music a lot more open to the masses in that its become more acceptable (I know I have commented on my dislike for Guetta in the past, but everyones gotta thank him for this one).

Oh and is the US that bad? I heard they have a massive growing scene in Vegas, plus you guys get a couple of pretty top notch Festivals catering to Electro like the Electric Daisy Carnival…

I know you said you are 8 hours drive from Chicago but I was always under the impression that the scene there was pretty sweet since its the birth place of house and all that,

If i was to list my top 20 dj/producers in the world, id reckon at least 6 of them are from or based in Chicago.

I am Irish myself so cant really comment on the U.K. but the scene here is pretty good, well pretty good for house and techno anyway.

Most of the major cities do have some good clubs and events. It varies a lot on where you are.   But if you are in a more rural area forget it.

I just think people in the UK and Europe are much more aware of dance music than here in the US.  It seems to be a much more accepted type of music there.

great post!! could not have said it better myself!!

Dance music is absolutely massive in the UK (England & Scotland, im from Scotland).

It seem’s that every year it seem’s to just get bigger & bigger, i’ve seen a fair few brilliant DJ’s over the last 2/3 years.

Last sunday night i was rocking it out to 2 Many DJ’s (Im presuming some of you guy’s have heard about them?!).

Maybe this will give you some idea!?

I really hate getting into this discussion maybe because I live in hollywood. and all i see is the best and brightest night clubs playing EDM every night. Personally I feel like as of right now many listeners to hip hop and indie rock are moving towards EDM in general all around the US more and more each day. It seems like every weekend the clubs get bigger and bigger. the festivals get bigger and bigger each year.

Isn’t Insomniac’s Electric Forest out in the midwest? I could swear that was one of their biggest event’s last year right behind EDC.

Anyways I say if you wanna find the music go to the right clubs. It’s fairly easy to find the right one’s with the internet and all. Look for event promoters hosting their own nights at certain clubs.

the UK may be more open to the scene but really it’s been an insane few years in the US with EDM.
Rob… (25/03/2012)
The dance music scenedown the country in Ireland is very bad. The club owners/ mangers and there Djs think that dance music is drug music and dont like it being played in there venues becauseit attracts drug users & criminals. And when they do play something with a dance beat it is usually a cheesy commercial track.
.

Where abouts are ya in the country Rob

Im around the south east, to be more specific Waterford is the nearest city, theres always somethin on, local lads every weekend and an international act at least once a month, Digweed in 2 weeks and people like Nic Fanciulli,Sneak Fish go Deep and Felix the housecat have all played in the last 3 months, thats a pretty healthy scene for a small city.

One thing I have learnt Ireland is the techno capital of Ireland :stuck_out_tongue: nearly everyone in Ireland listens to techno!

The uk is banging, loads of nights all over the place whatever style your into.

That’s what happened back in the day is the U.S techno pioneers came over to the uk and Europe and we took it to a new level

Brilliant guys.

Probably one of the best guys i’ve seen live up here (Aberdeen) is without a doubt Damian Lazarus (Heard of him?) he was giving it loads behind the decks, which is always good to see.

in Romania it’s completely the opposite . Most listen to commercial house music and there’s the rest of people. That’s what i can say about what happens here. I live in a city with about 200k people and I’ve been to alot great performances here in edm in 2011-2010.

The Prodigy , Foreign Beggars , Richie Hawtin , Fedde Le Grand , Loco Dice , Borgore , Above & Beyond , Tiesto , A.Skillz , Freestylers , Marco Carola , Ricardo Villalobos , Plump Djs (coming on 3rd april ) .

Basically what i’m implying is that we don’t really have a lot of hip-hop/indie/rock shows but mostly EDM. Fairly the ones up there were in a strange order ,must say i didn’t like them all but we have at least one international artist every sat and fri so it’s all good here.

Here it’s more like 1 strong artist , 1 warmup not like the parties in uk with huge lineups with very good artists.

Oh yeah and I will be the first EDM producer in my town when i launch my tracks :))

down in San Diego the scene has grown at an epopnential rate over the last few years… to the point now where i can see 1-3 top notch djs a week if i really wanted too…

fluxx and voyeur’s bookings in downtown SD has been nuts lately, and then you have the WaveHouse (aka Ravehouse) right on mission beach with parties with huge names (recently dash berlin) on Sunday all spring n summer…

Sorry, it wasnt right of me to bash the U.S. scene, just mainly wanted to know what UK is like for dance music, but romania sounds awesome too

As most of the SA tutors are from Northern Ireland I should really mention it. There’s a really healthy, albeit smallish, scene in Belfast at the moment for decent underground dance music ranging from techno & house to disco & soul. There was a time when the small club scene had died a death here but the amount of people who are now putting on smallish nights with really good international guests is amazing. Here’s a few to check out…

There’s also guys who put on great nights where they bring the residents from pretty much every underground night Belfast together to play together. There’s a real growing sense of community amongst the scene right now.

The only real shame is that the politicians here are trying to reduce the already ridiculous opening hours. Clubs can serve alcohol until 1.30am and continue playing music until 3am. They are trying to reduce that 2am. When the country is trying it’s hardest to increase tourism post-troubles, it’s a significant backward step, if it’s allowed to happen.
