deadau5 tutorial
MeMomAndaVirus (18/05/2010)

jon_fisher (04/05/2010)

MeMomAndaVirus (04/05/2010)
iam pretty shocked to hear about what Deadmau5 has been saying lately !

but i think i disagree with most of this conversation

first of all Deadmau5 isn’t a DJ …he performs his tracks live

& thats the way producers should be going now !

lets not mix up a DJ from a DJ/Producer/Live Performer/Remixer …there’s a big diff !

yes back in the days producers needed to rely on DJ’s to get there tracks heard & sold but 10 years ago most producers were producers & most DJ’s were just DJ’s

if you have been around in the dance scene as long as i have …about 25 years …then it’s all pretty boring …& its really cool that technology now allows a producer to perform his tracks live !!!

now what is exactly “good live performing” well my opinion only trance producers

really actually do hard work , since you have a sound coming in at every 8 bars “not including effects” …& 16 + channels to keep track of

where as House its more like 16 bars & the most 8 channels

DeadMau5 takes a short cut & uses 4 channels

in a reply back, i truly feel that he is kidding himself if he considers to be a live act. sure i like his music and i think his sound is of high quality but he is no different to a dj playing pre recorded material.

also for many of the “live” acts that i know have all played in clubs and events acting to pre recorded sets. i’m not going to post names because they are friends and wouldn’t want them to loose gigs through this.

unless you are playing at least one instrument then you can’t consider your self to be performing live its that simple.

people had been doing this on Logic 5.5 for years but as soon as Ableton “Live” became popular everyone suddenly became a live act :)
well technically when your playing un-pre-sequenced tracks …in other words separate sounds on separate channels constructing a track …

instead of just worrying about the first 32 bars & last 32 bars of a track …its what ! …ok …its not live …but it’s in between …

a name needs to created for music artists that perform tracks …ehmmm how to say it now …Looping !!!:hehe: …isn’t it a Live DJ ! ?
but when ever i’ve seen videos he’s only ever triggering loops via a midi controller, all the loops look to me at least to be pre-programmed or audio loops making it no different from a dj.

anyway lets just agree to disagree over this.

i’m not a deadmau5 hater btw

he’s basically mixing and adjusting sounds live isn’t he?

so lets just call him a live mix sound engineer

On the whole dead5 thing, i’ve read the interviews in mixmag, CM music etc… and he does come accross as a bit of a t*t, watched a couple of his production videos - one where he’s looping greatest dancer and he’s not that interesting a producer.

But thats all in my opinion, he’s not making music that interests me or doing production that production techniques that particularly interest me, so i think ultimatly what i’m trying to say si he has no real bearing on me, my music and what i listen to - but I understand some people are into him.

Essentially i just find him pretty boring.

But then i’m sure others find what i listen to and make pretty boring - essentially eahc to their own? Now if only Dead5 could be liek that?

well all i know is …when your a 1 man show …there isnt really enough time & hands to do alot of lets say Live Instrument stuff

there’s just different styles of performing now …DJ’s have it really good these days …everything is auto sync’d up & in beat …much different than the oldschool way…

some performers have there sounds looping & being outputed threw a 32 channel mixer … & manually staying in beat …& some use midi controller’s …launch pads… & Ableton or Traktor…that’s the way it is

but you only have enough time to do certain things on a Nord Lead & a Drum Pad lets say …even Moby is listed as a DJ…even Liam of Prodidy was called a DJ …but there nothing like a DJ

difference is liam and moby both play the synths on stage, other members of the prodigy play Bass Guitars and also do so of the singing Mc’ing. playing drums.

if he does any more that just triggering loops via a midi device and either himself or a fan can show me a video that shows this then i’ll shut up and admit he’s a live performer.
