Don't buy music making magazines

No

why post this? its silly. people (myself included) learn alot from these magazines… cant see where youre coming from apart from having too much time on your hands and being angry at “the man”

chill, have coke and a smile

Cheeky cnut :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve learned loads from the mags, plus the DVD is always rammed full of wicked free samples each month! SA and FM for me are the two which have got me to where i am today production skill wise.

Yeah i agree i’ve learn’t heaps from these mags, and like everyone else has said the discs come’s laoded with real good extras

hey guys let’s be rational here. of course lorddarthfader is a master producer, he has no time to waste on stupid things like advice.

that’s why he ranks on beatport’s top 10 every week.

Gedeon, you spelt ranks wrong mate. Need a W instead of an R!!

Ok beleive it of not I am going to side with LDF - I only buy FM or CM if there is a particular producer I like or respect and even then 80% of the time I am hugely dissappointed

As for the paper thin dvds - wow I have sample coming out of every orifice of my PC do I really need even more that I am never going to use, If I want a demo of a vst I don’t need to buy the mag

Ofcourse the magazines are there to sell you gear - how else would they make money - I mean if they gave a really bad a review on some peice of gear do you think the manufactuer is really going to spend money on advertising

Don’t get me wrong I am sure I could learn alot more techniques just I prefer my medium of learning online, reading forums/ books asking and discussing with mates

Plus the fact when I see those shiny ads I am like a kid in a sweet shop

Slender is Scott

You know mate theres a little bit of Scott in all of us

All my potential bias aside, I read magazines because I like reading about the things that interest me.

So if they teach me something new then cool, sometimes it might just be for the joy of reading about something I like. The same is true for non-music mags also.

As for the advertiser thing, part of me likes the ads in magazines… for the reason above, and I like to know about interesting products etc.

Of course there is always a battle between integrity and keeping afloat, but the way I see it, give honest reviews and the magazine will be more popular, and that way advertisers will want to come back regardless.

isnt that the same thing?

I used to get CM but it became less interesting to me, now I get FM and to be honest I have been thinking about stopping that as well, I don’t seem to get much out of it now but it is a little entertaining.

I think when you are just starting out, when you don’t know anything, CM is a really good mag to get.

As for the charge that magazines give good reviews to get advertising, I don’t think that is right in this case. My wife is a freelance magazine editor and sub editor and although she hasn’t worked on these two mags she has worked for Future (who publish both) and also other well known music, gadget, and hi-fi magazines and in all of them they keep editorial and advertising separate. It is true that if the advertising people had their way the would give good reviews to advertisers, but they don’t, the editorial team does. I have known a large advertiser pull adverts for a bad review, but everyone knows they will come back.

This isn’t true for women fashion mags which are outrageous.
