Getting Noticed!

Interesting read Kaiori and agree with you
Kaiori_Breathe (25/07/2010)

dannycueballtaylor (24/07/2010)
Hey guys,

I often see budding producers on Soundcloud and similar sites getting big hits on their tracks literally as soon as they post them, like 200 plus listens in a day. I’m not talking established artists or even particularly decent tracks. But these guys seem to get alot of hits, is it that they are SpamPests or do they have a secret? Maybe some of you more experienced guys can share your views/ideas on how to get yourself maximum exposure, without becoming a SpamPest(c)?

Cheers,

Danny.
Most of us are on forums that have feedback threads, you upload your track to soundcloud, then post it in a feedback thread and other forum members will leave crit on your tunes. I’m on DSF (dubstepforum) and if you post a tune in the feedback thread you’ll get about 20 responses for it. There’s that, plus if you put the track in your sig (which is pretty standard over there) people see it in your posts and listen and sometimes leave comments because of that.

There’s also facebook accounts to take into consideration, if you’re using facebook to network (as I do) you’ve over 100 friends who are for the most part producers like yourself you’re going to get a lot of comments from that.

There’s also a sort of unspoken rule that if you get crit you should give it back because soundcloud is a pretty closely knit community. So you can abuse this if you want, and spend a day or two giving crit to people in order to get it returned. It’s a little self-serving but let’s face it, everyone wants feedback so they can improve so a lot of people do it too and nobody really sees it in a bad light because we all understand you’re there to learn and improve and as long as you’re giving valid crit and not just spamming “cool tune bro” on every track you see you should be ok.

You are also able to send notifications to people of new tracks you’ve got up, a lot of these I get say something like “you have been sent a track by _______ it has been shared to you and 903489494859 other people” - these messages are annoying as hell, I will admit they are a good way to get views, but annoying none the less.

Those things taken into consideration are probably why those guys are getting so many crits so fast. After a while when you break the 400ish follower mark you’ll notice almost immediate crit.

Also for what it’s worth, I’m signed to two labels (both of whom came to me) thanks to exposure on sound cloud. I’ve never sent off a demo in my life. (Not saying that you shouldn’t, this is just something I decided ages ago) - I also get requests from new labels to sign my tunes on a near daily basis, requests for collaborations from other well established and signed artists and requests to do remixes for other labels and artists. So anybody who says people on sound cloud are there because labels won’t touch them is slightly underestimating the talent there. A lot of big artists use it. Nearly every big dubstep artist is on there. (Note, I said dubstep, not brostep)

So anybody who says people on soundcloud are there for a pat on the back or because labels won’t touch them doesn’t quite have their facts right.

Also, getting involved in name calling via the internet will be very damaging for anybody looking to get signed as most labels WILL do a search on you and will find your post history, and even if you’re posting under a different name they’re usually able to tie it all together.

If you have a bad attitude you’re not getting signed.

EDIT: You should use every resource you have at your disposal, myspace, facebook, soundcloud, bandcamp, torrent sites, production forums, genre specific forums, reverb nation, youtube - to name a few. If you’re not making full use of all of these, then you should be. The best way to get signed, imo, is not to send off demos, but to get noticed.

There’s nothing wrong with self-promotion. Nothing at all. Don’t listen to people who say otherwise. Maybe 1% of people who try in this game will get signed without making an effort to and never sending off demos and not putting their stuff out there, but for the rest of us we’ve got to make a name for ourselves before you get signed and one of the best places to do that right now is online.

Make a plan, learn about the tools you have at your disposal for promoting yourself, and get to work.

If you want to get signed you have to see this as business as well as music.
Hey Kaiori, good post. Your signed to Amber D’s record label right? Amour Records? good job, i know her. Played with her once last year i think it was when her and Freddy Fisher from BB played in Stoke-on-Trent. Good night!

Hmm, you’re thinking of D’Amour I think. Amber does some fantastic work though.

I’m with Mat Gravatt’s Amour - slightly smaller :stuck_out_tongue:

I think i already posted something about how to work with Soundcloud before . I am not trying to be cocky but thanks to soundcloud i got 7 tracks signed by different Labels for release in the next month . but seems that people don’t believe the power of soundcloud yet . but well it is their lost :stuck_out_tongue:

also I have been getting gigs thanks to Reverbnation. i don’t know if you guys know about it but you can build your press package and send it for free to venues for the first 30 days .

so yeahh . there is alot of resources to be noticed out there but it takes time but it pays off.

Now this is some of the sites you might be interested to sign in and promote your Music

Residentadvisor.net

Just signed upto Reverbnation. Thats the one i actually meant lol.

@ House Jack .

Reverbnation is an excellent site .

the cool thing is that u can save the shows that you performed in CVS files . wich is really a good way to build up your press kit. also it keeps track of the venues you Djed .

I usually sync it to Artist Data account so whenever i am going to dj , the site Alerts the newspapers m venues, and facebook friends , Myspace , and other social networks.

now Reverbnation,s press kit looks slick and it is easy to update it .

I am sure u will like Reverbnation

Personally, I dont post my finished tracks on soundcloud. If I think its good enough (and boy, am I critical), then I will shop it. The bigger labels wont always sign a track if its on Soundcloud. Now, Im not saying it will never happen, but its not typical. However, I love to put up things and rough drafts that I am working on to get feedback from other people and stuff and use that as a building block for my work.

Yeah I gotta agree, I feel more partial towards this point of view too.
