Importance of Studio Monitors?

I was just curious as to how important it is to have good quality studio speakers.

I understand that when creating music you create music to what sounds good on YOUR speakers but then on someone else’s what you created could sound completely off.

I was looking at my local music store and I seen small 8" studio monitors that cost up to $3000!

I’m using a pretty weak 2.1 logitech system and I was wondering what everyones opinion was on the importance of upgrading to some KRK’s or what type they prefer or are using or even if it’s worth looking into?!

Perhaps i’ll just get some good quality headphones…

Anyways, i’d love to hear everyones opinion on this topic!

Very crucial as you want to hear the full frequency spectrum…I used to use ****ty pc speakers lol then i got some KRK 5 i got the 2 for 300 dollars and they’re pretty sick! you got a full spectrum and pretty good low end really helped me improve my mixdowns and sound design

You don’t need to soend £3000 on monitors, but upgrading from logitech will make your life easier.

Go and listen to several before you choose a pair. Make sure you check out KRK, Genelecs and, my favorite, Adam audio.

definitely get the best ones you can afford

im switchin between headphones and a single krkrp5 at the min cos i cant afford a second one

most people wd scoff at my setup but its better than the hifi speakers i was using

and i will get a second one when i can afford it

I feel your pain :frowning:

But I have noticed a great improvement on my mixdowns since investing ina pair of monitors - probably one of the best purchases I have made this year

I can’t stress enough the importance of good monitors, these are cruitial!!

Wow, thanks a lot for all your advice!

I had no idea that they were so important or made such a huge difference, I must really be missing out.

Is it really that much easier to mixdown?

I would not say its easier - but you will get more clarity in how your mix sounds

yep it is so unbelievably important its unreal. if you ever want to make a track with the view of getting it released then you need monitors.

OXYMORON KLAXON!

Tbh mate its a double edged sword because even tho good monitors are crucial, a properly acousticly treated room is just as important…

I would defo say that it helps with mixing down. I used to spend weeks cross-referencing tracks because my speakers were muck… as soon as I got my monitors it was cleaner, easier on the ears, and allowed me to get the levels much quicker.

Having said that, it will take your ears a while to get used to the speakers - because of the speakers I got are quite sharp on the low ends my mixes tended to be bass heavy, and the kicks too large.

Now my ear is tuned to that, I’m making more balanced tracks.

Long story short; pick monitors you like the sound of (demo them!) and don’t expect them to fix your mixing STRAIGHT away.

+1 on Adam Monitors! Could not believe how good these sound. The A7X!!

Big fan of Mackie HR824’s, but that’s just preference.

Yes, you’d want the best monitors you can afford.  In my opinion, for the sheer fact that it makes time in the studio more fun is justification enough.  If you’re listening to music on good speakers, it makes it that much more enjoyable.

I do agree what they said about treating the room acoustics too, but to me that is secondary.

I’m no pro but I would think acoustic treatment is just as important if not more important than monitors. But just get the best you can afford. At the end of the day talent will show through a ****ty mix down!

No doubt, but bedroom laptop guys who are on a limited budget should not spend $500 on acoustic treatment and $500 on monitors. I would opt for the $1,000 monitors.

That’s just my opinion. What do I know though. :stuck_out_tongue:

Wouldn’t you then get poor results from from your monitors?!? Pointless spending all that money without the correct acoustics.

Fair enough

i was using a fairly crap monitoring system up until last week, when me KRK 6" arrived

My room is small, quite small, so I set them up & realized than one side seemed bass’ier than other side ? hm ? So I switched monitors & still bass’ier on the same side? hm? then I realized than one monitor was sitting on a lot of books & the other was sitting on a few boxes… ok so fixed them so both were sitting on books, (dont have monitor stands-( & it was grand… So the last week I’v been treating the room walls with drapes, carpet on wall & floor, blankets cushions etc… so to reduce sound reflection. My objective to have as less coloration as possible… I’m nearly finished … its a lot more cosy in there for sure & sounds remarkable dead… I think its improved 10fold but we’ll see…

How was the change pre-KRK’s to post Krk’s?

as big a difference as everyone says?
