Impulse vs. Drum Rack

I have grown attached to the impulse in Ableton because of the tutorials on this site.

But lately I have been playing with the drum rack and messing around with different things.

For some reason I like the look and feel of impulse better... probably cause i know how 2 use it better..

Which do most of the people on this site use when making drum beats and why do you think one instrument is better than the other?

CPU? Control? Sound Quality? Any major differences that somebody can spell out 2 me?

I’ve used Impulse for the majority of my projects but Drum Rack offers a simpler in each slot so greater control over the sample in there. i do like the routing it offers for effects and the like.

I started with Impulse but have recently migrated over to Drum Rack.

The main reason simply being control. Being able to put effects on individual hits, and even have instrument racks assigned to a pad (great for layering hits).

You can drop Analog and Operator into individual slots too meaning you can use them for weird percussion (or whatever really).

So yeah, just the potential of it really. Impulse is really great for getting a quick idea down, and I still love its simplicity, but as I get more adventurous, Drum Rack is where its at.

You can do a heck of a lot more with Drum Rack but still for me i love using Impulse.

I do things a bit differently anyways, i don’t have 1 Impulse for my hats, snares and kick. I literally have 3 seperate Impulses on 3 different channels, I have all the control I need, plus I like it like that when i’m laying things out on my arrange window.

+1 to this… It also provide you the ability to audition different instruments and individual hits within a drum sequence quickly without having to thumb through your sample library every time you want to change something up.

i use impulse too prob cause i’m just more familiar with it i know you have more scope with drum rack but if you use it like roben said or do your audio out to seperate tracks and then group them you can still add different fx to seperate percusion anyway…

the big reason i prefer impulse is the way you can just chuck some samples in and get cracking…

There has been alot of talk about this in the past. check out the search function. they are there somewhere.

Depends what you want to do

yah this is what I do with impulse as well. so i havnt run into issues of control…

but I do like the idea of being able to throw an operator into a drum rack. thats cool.

like what ???

I use impulse because Well ive used it sooooooo long, when i can be bothered Ill probably have à go at drum racks, i hate how loud everything is that you put into impulse. Simpler has an automatic db cut which is nice plus the extra controle with fx and such on individual hits is very Nice.

Plus you automatically get a channel fader for each drum which is just handy, and more choke group options etc.

Also macro controls too which make it easy to do live or organic edits/automation on the fly.

Is that answer a joke?

I’ve seen all the sonic tutorial and i’ve never spotted anything that one can do more or better than the other.

Really Jon?

I’d have though this was a bit of a no brainer. I have no major preference either way, but I’ve always thought of impulse as a quick usable tool for drums (or whatever else) and Drum Rack as the more complex version with more advanced features.

Like Simpler/Sampler. I happen to use Simpler 90% of the time, but know Sampler is much more capable.

Extra capability doesn’t necessarily mean it’s ‘better’ though, as in this game simplicity and ease of use are big virtues in their own right.

+1

Uhhhh, you can do the same thing with both guys. The routing is a little different. All impulse is is a simpler version of drum racks with only 8 sound sources available. But if you dont mind routing, you can do all the same stuff with both. Period.

If you want to waste your time, you can attempt to prove me wrong.

Hmm, not sure I am following the thread then?

Jon commented that you couldn’t do anything more or better with one than the other.

There is lots you can do with Drum Rack ‘as is’ that you can’t with impulse ‘as is’. You yourself pointed this out with your own words.

So straight away Drum Rack can do more than 8 sound sources ‘as is’.
But if you dont mind routing, you can do all the same stuff with both.
Well yeah… doesn’t that too imply that Drum Rack - with its lack of need for re routing - can do more.

My Honda does the same as a ferrari, with a few mods.

PS I don’t feel like I wasted any of my time pointing that out either!

man this thread is starting to get hostile!

we talking about BEATS people! keep it friendly! phewww. :D

i watch a lot of the tutorials as well and I havnt seen any that shows why 1 is better than the other... but I havnt watched them all, so Maby I missed one!

i think im just going to keep having a go with drum rack more often to see if the experience changes my mind to sway me away from impulse.
