Mac or PC

I have a few PC’s, run a.live, and have problems constantly. Things like staggering, etc… I spoke to tech support and they said less problems with Mac’s. Can anyone else give me feedback before I eat the expensive apple?

Thanks.

Mo

totally worth it, ive been on apples now for around 5 years and would never go back to pc. i don’t want to sound like an advert but apples just work

oh and also in 5 years ive only had 1 fail (that was my brother dropping a pint on my external drive) and i’ve only ever had maybe 4 system crashes (caused by a bug in logic 7.1)had one small technical problem when i changed to leopard with my external sound card not working for about 1 week (drivers didn’t work)

Thanks for the heads up. Thats what I usually hear…“they just work.” What sound card are you using? I have a FF400 and was thinking about the duet

yawn the whole ‘mac vs pc’ debate bores me to tears, it’s down to personal preference in the end of the day.

It’s like debating over Cubase & Logic, Pioneer DJM & Alan & Heath, Senheisser HD25 & Sony MDR V700 Headphones & Alan & Heaths or Rovers & BMWs or even CDJ vs Vinyl.

Personal preference, that’s all it is.

to be honest i am using a really cheap M-audio Sound Card (M-Audio Audiophile Firewire) think you can pick them up for around £100 these days. its the only card i’ve had thats kept going. i’ve had to or three other cards in the past and they’ve all fail along the way somewhere.

thats what a pc owner would say

Apples always get to ‘core’ of the problem right away. I find they ‘pip’ the post when it comes to PCs. :w00t:

Yawn? Seriously? If it bores you so much then don’t post. Ableton tech support told macs have less problems so I’m confirming with the knowledgeable peeps at SA. tired of the down time from fixing a crack, or whatever, then not being able to use vista. In the end I’m running late on finishing remixes. I’m looking for ease of use and reliability. I swore by pc’s now I’m not so sure.

when it comes to the mac v pc debate then there isn’t one, they are both essentially the same things underneath the hood

its more a case of OSX v Windows and to be fair anyone that prefers windows to osx for making music is insane

a funny slant on the debate from charlie brooker

Hi Guys,

I think this whole mac v pc debate is getting confusing. Should we be chosing the software first as some are platform specific. Logic is mac only, Sonar pc only. Both great DAWs. I think macs are being championed at the moment because it’s cool to have one.I use both and like both. Just keep your pc away from the net.

thats exactly it!!! pc’s are great if you keep them away from the internet, don’t install and un-install loads of ****, keep loads of room on the hard drive and spend hours maintaining them.

also i would like to add that windows is always ok until Microsoft decide something needs fixing and want to update, they fix one problem and cause 2 this continues until they finally decide to change and build a new os.

im not saying osx is perfect but its workable, and everyday with out fail. windows 7 looks good but i’ll guarantee that in two years people will still be bitching about problems and the fact that it gets slower with every update (windows standard) were as 99% of mac users report boosts in performance with the updates. apple do get it wrong too from time to time so no ones perfect.

i’ve had the mac i am using now for 2 years, its never had an anti-virus used on it and i’ve never had to De-fragment it, use any kind of system clean up and it still runs as good as the day i got it

when it comes to choosing my Operating system then to me it doesn’t matter weather i am using logic, reason, cubase or ableton i will always stick with osx until something better comes along.

if i knew how to do it well, i would have no problems using a hackintosh instead of and over priced mac. but as it is i don’t so i pay for apple mac’s

i would love to give sonar a go but couldn’t be bothered with windows. sonar looks like it packs so much in for the cash.

Sonar is a great DAW and great value. I’m still on ver7 but like the look of ver8.5. You realy do need to get a specialist built pc though. I use the Digital Village Synergy which ultra quiet and stable. I also run ableton on a macbook pro, which is great for getting ideas down quickly. I can’t stress enough the importance of buying a dedicated music pc, for anyone going down that route.

Chill dude, no need to get so defensive on this messageboard, we’re all friends here

I’m just saying that people can get wrapped up too much these days about what’s best when really should just worry about their own choices rather than the preferences of others.

This goes to most something vs something debates, it wasnt a jab at this one in particular.

i think you’ve pushed a good point about people choosing the software that works best for them and not just using something because someone else uses it.

the debates that bore me though are the ones that people use artists names to make them feel better about the software they have chosen.

for example:

person 1: reason is crap and so limited!

person 2: no its the best software in the world, you do know that liam from the prodigy used it to write the new album.

person 1: yawn!!!

when a person writes “Yawn” its taken as your above the conversation and bored. I know were all friends here, which is why I was surprised you came off so crass. OK then I misunderstood and it’s all good. When I ask about mac or pc< i know what I’m getting into -it’s a loaded question. Bottom line is I’m using ableton and people who use mac seem to be running smoothly. I’m not and I have 3 pc’s. I’m thinking about a switch which is no guarantee, but everyone I know who uses mac, for the most part, seems to be working efficiently. I just needed more confirmation before droppin 2k.

Thanks for the support on this topic.
