It would have been MUCH more useful for Phil to explain chord progressions. Why a I sounds good after a V, movement through a riff etc. Even the bassline element was bang away till it sounds good. What about discussing harmony on a bass, using a different key, dropping the root of each chord down by, say, -2 octaves and trying that.
+1
Had the above been done the whole thing would have catered more for intermediate & above and been less newbie.
Aint had time to watch 'em yet…
But - I’ve read lots of people asking for vids in the past where Phil shows the process of looking for a sound, or chord or whatever. So maybe that will suit some people.
If it was “Advanced” - fair enough… maybe its too simple. But its not… so give Phil a break
phil johnston (19/11/2010)

Roben (19/11/2010)
I don’t get it?
Have i missed something completely?
Was it not obvious just by LISTENING to tracks like Pjanoo that the bassline and chords followed a similar key structure? Am i the only one that didn’t really need Phil to tell me that’s what happens in these tracks?
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean to have a moan, but it seems like rather than having more technical / advanced tutorials which this site needs, we’ve been given another video series in laymens terms for people who are too lazy to work out something that’s obvious and simplistic.
& what p*sses me off is that the request and most of the +1’s was made by people who arn’t even subscribers!
Why cater for those who arn’t even supporting the cause? AND can’t even watch the videos anyways!! They should try SUBSCRIBING and watching the rest of the tuts first before making requests for tuts we don’t need.
How about more advanced stuff?
By the way ICN…

Time of the month roben?
Ive been playing keyboards for 20 odd years and still have problems with coming up with decent chords… i just thought it was cool to look at a way to break it down in to parts to make it easier. But if your already a chord progression master then I salute you… make me some chords? ;)
well said that man !!
Musical theory is vast, Explaining why V should go to the i chord, or something like changing keys, or using extended chords or inversions can go on forever. Applying music theory and creativity is upto the user. Since this is just part 1 and talks about the basic elements, I am sure part 2 would have a deeper and advanced insight !
Sometimes keeping things simple goes a long way ! Especially with house tunes ! I am sure most have you heard Avicci’s remix of Nadia Ali’s Rapture(No.3 on beatport).
If not please listen to it and watch how simple his progressions go :-
- YouTube
Cheers
The next instalment of the Music Theory tuts would have been more useful.
In fact, perhaps all those non subscribers who requested and voted for the mainroom house tut should first
A: Subscribe
B: Watch the music theory tuts
I see too many people on here wanting their ‘quick pill’, some video that gets them their beatport top 10 after one production attempt.
If they bothered to watch the vast selection of SA tutorials and bothered to practice, they’d definitelly not have requested the main room house tuts.
It’s not that it wasn’t advanced enough. It’s simply that a LARGE part of the running time is watching Phil tap away at his keyboard to find something he likes. The essential advice here is just bang away till you find something.
It’s not a tutorial for either beginner or advanced. Just watching Phil tap away helps no one right?
The parts about creating the sounds are fine. After that it’s just not really that helpful.
Havent watched them yet - so believe you Jon!

sorry rant
so from what I understand i sense frustration here that we dont have music theory lessons instead ???

I haven’t watch this yet…but music theory would be ace too!
Phil, maybe in future you guys could send a survey via email to all subscribers?

No, not from me at least. Can’t speak for anyone else. It’s simply that large parts of the tut seemed very lightweight with little if any discernible learning content. Musical voyeurism not real learning.
Damn, didn’t mean to over analyze it like this.

Pretty ballsy for someone that gets a free membership to the site. Here are the main things that I have picked up from SA. After the main bit of production tips and learning to navigate in my DAW, and getting some main principals about music production down, the only thing that will help you is practice. I haven’t watched the videos, but if Phil is talking about layering, then I dont remember him going too deep into this before. It would be welcome for me to watch. Besides, I love to watch how he works. I personally could care less about 90% of things that Phil teaches, but I like to watch Phil’s work flow. I have been in studios, watching my boy Robby work, Josh Gabriel work, and Sander Kleininburg work. Work flow is great. They will go from part to part so quickly and its great to see how their mind works. Keeping going and getting your ideas flowing quickly and learning how to finish tracks is essential. Pick up the little things here and there. But dont complain about everything. Learn what you can from what you are given, because you cant please everyone and every video will teach you something, whether be it small or large.

Look this isnt the OC, Desperate house wives or Eastenders its a tutorial video 30mins of 120 or more hours. Its not going to be a blockbuster full of drama… its just a bit of knowledge… if you already knew it then sweet.
Ive written loads of songs that have made me xxxxx£ and used the same system so i know its one way of doing it.
its about taking it and doing your own thing with it… our job isnt to write the music for you!!! its to give you as many useful tips as possible to inspire and maybe make it a bit easier for you.
Its not going to be interesting to everyone… maybe as ive said your banging out classic chords all day long and your having difficulties in a different place.
If you think you have stuff to contribute join our user generated content beta and make your own stuff … make samples, beats etc and put your talent where your mouth is!!

can’t sleep Phil ? lol
btw I totally agree with you and Howie
only just in… lol
how could i sleep with the stress of making main room house techno trance tutorials all the time.
Like i said in the tutorial i spend days using the techniques i showed you coming up with stuff that sound cool… I could say going form a Cmin to a Gsharp to Fmaj and using a melody of a d, c to a and back will make you a No1 beatport hit but its an ever evolving sea of changing ****. whats cool today is only cool for 20mins… if you arnt already learning to thin for yourself in terms of chords your already way behind the game… and its something no one can really teach.
Its about what 'feels" right
either that or im totally pissed!!

Yeah that makes sense… but what you have to understand is that the “quick pill” you are referring to is what leads to them digging deeper into the actual theory side of the music.
When you really think about it… every producer begins the same way. they hear a sound that they decide they want to imitate or mimic. Then they find out in order to get better they have to learn more than just making that specific sound and understand the theory behind it.
It’s the initial “quick pill” that got me into it, and I’ve realized that there is no way one can get better at this craft if they don’t understand music theory.
