Wayne: SA didn’t know I was going to do this. I did it of my own volition as a response to yesterday’s nonsense…

We are just blaming you for everything… seems to be the norm now…!!

Lucky basterds… I must say I think I might be one of 5 Americans that actually uses loose tea for my drinks. Earl Grey is my favorite!

I’m always blamed for everything! It’s all my fault!

J

Haha!

Hi5 for Earl Grey. I take it black, no milk or sugar.

Live life to the max

JamieinNC = Genius!!

Outstanding vids jaime!!

Jamie i want to personally apologize to you, as i said i really like your vids i was just dissapointed with the conclusion and i think i coulda definately presented my case in a better and friendlier way.

Much respect to you for making these vids AND doing it for free and a big thank you for giving SA some music theory tutorials.

Once again i really wanna apologise for acting like a ****, it just started as one point and got kinda out of hand so ill hold my head up and say im sorry and i hope we can move on from this and continue to help each other out.

Sounds great! Hope the videos fill in what was missed on the first go around!

Sorry for harshness I verbalized as well, it’s just that I take all this very seriously if you haven’t noticed. Again, I hope the 6 videos here in the thread help explain my process a bit better.

Thank god for 1/2 time - otherwise he’d have kept scoring own goals all night

Yeah well I can tell by the way you talk about different historic musical elements that you have a lot of knowledge this latest series of vids was exactly what I was missing the first time around so its great to see.

I wish I would of put more effort into learning the theory side of things from the beginning as im really feeling it now as most of my melodies and chord progressions arr jusy me playing ranfomly untill something sounds good. It would be nice to be able to sit down and plan out these things and think oh I want this part to sound sad so ill use these chord progressions and this part to be uplifting so this melody playing these notes over these chords would be great for that.

Unfortunately im retarded with theory its just something that wont sit well with me this is why I love getting into a studio with a keyboard player and I can just hum out the stuff and tell him what I want things to sound like. Im seriously thinking about getting some keyboard lessons in the winter.

Keyboard helps greatly because it is one of the very few instruments where you can see all of the chord and scale shapes without having to actually touch the instrument. Part of the reason why I go to such great lengths to open up the issue of theory is because most folks just rely upon what they hear on the big tracks and follow those chord progressions.

Granted, those chord progressions work well, but after a while one starts to wonder what else might be able to be done with harmonies and notes of a scale to get something “different.” The point of theory is to examine many of the intricate and interesting ways music flows from one chord to the next or perhaps one note of a melody to the next. That exploration is really what drives one forward, but it does take a bit of work and understanding. The keyboard helps because it quickens your reaction time to what you want musically. When you study the scales and the modes and chords, things start to come together for you because you’ll not only be thinking about the scales, but you’ll be seeing them in front of you as well.

And, I’m a piano teacher, so of COURSE I’d suggest piano lessons.

Nice videos Jamie

I am also totally pants at melodies and wish i had spent as much time learning music theory as i have spent learning how to use a DAW to go CRASH BANG WOLLUP :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s funny how we can spend hours on end getting that kick sitting perfect with a bassline

then when it comes to the melody we give up too easy and the tune sits unfinished.

I really need to spend more time studying music, thank’s for the help Jamie

You are very welcome. Practice onward!

I want to thank jamie and jan (but mostly jamie) for one of the best music tutorials I have ever seen. Think I will watch them again =)

You’re very welcome, Gamlow!

J

Hey Jamie,

I try and make my productions as “melodically rich” as possible, however I’m always only using my ears to try and figure out what sounds good. I’ve just watched your vid tutorials and they are spot on. Mass confusion on parts as I still need to learn more about scales but the techniques all make sense and why/where you can apply them. Top man for doing them in your own time and posting up in the forum… :w00t:

p.s. It helps also that you don’t have the same old monotonous american accent
