Interesting article, Sandwell District played Fabric last week, would of loved to have taken a trip down if i had more time to get organised, loving the Function’s remixes at the present especially Ness’s Diagnostic Imaging, a nice groovin, dubbed out, hypnotic hi-hat adventure of Blissed-out Techno, what more can i say UNBELIEVABLE UNF**KINBELIEVABLE.

Hey,  yeah, Mick thing from Napalm Death seems to have a lot to answer for! LOL

Hate saying what “I” was doing - But I was @ a seminar thing with Donnacha Costello in Dublin today. He was playing loads of Sandwell District, Regis, Silent Servant, British Murder Boys, AFX as well as loads of old house / Basic Channel stuff.

He was saying that that type of Tech is really interesting right now, cos they’re doing something completely new sounding… yet a nod to the past - You’ve just got to completely Fkn love Tech. Its such great music.

Would love to see SD too… Fabric is a great spot. Would have been demented :hehe:

So where is the 2000 word report on the seminar then

Well… The best thing about it was the fact that it was soo cool & relaxed…

He was just chatting really about the similar things that all great house / techno music has, shares. Dont think he mentioned it directly, but he highlighted the timeless nature of certain tracks from the different decades…

Basically what they all share is the classic Roland boxes, a raw production sound, and new, but not faddy (at the time) perspectives. No surprise there, but it was interesting actually watching all this unfold & the penny dropping.

I’ve thought this a while now… but all that older Birmingham Tech again… likes of James Ruskin (listen to his Into Submission album from 2001) - and it still sounds fresh. I’ve been listening to it all again recently on vinyl & just going F U C K !!

No-one said it there… but a lot of those Dettmann / Klock grooves, general vibe… are nicely related to the likes of those Basic Channel records. I dunno… why reinvent the wheel in a way… just update it & stick a new twist on it - LOL

I do think though that if anything, you should stick to your guns & make whatever type of music you want to make… eat, breathe & sleep it - cos life is too short. I’ve got so much respect for the Lads that have been chugging away over the years as my tastes went in other directions. Listening back to some older stuff now, it only makes sense now.

We spent some time looking at how he works. He uses Live now totally. Interesting to see how he works. He goes through phases of buying loads of synths etc… and selling them (I’ve seen him do this online often…)… then he’ll leave music for a few years and come back again… and the process continues. He’s currently using loads of TAL synths… the U-NO-60 and the Bassline ones.

Uses little compression on anything other than drums & bass as far as I can tell & uses all Lives fx. Expept reverb… uses the Lexicon Native Bundle. He was showing a remix that he did for one of the Guys from Godflesh (who made an album cos he said he was inspired by one of D’s albums). Donnacha was proud that he was able to do something with a Guy who provided some of the soundtrack of his youth.

Interesting remix he did:

All TAL synths… for the synths - All Bassline afaik

Really interesting loops in it… Think its 5/4 - really cool track actually. All his stuff has odd time signatures running in the background. Theres another few cool tracks, cant remember them now :hehe:

Really nice, interesting, normal sensible chap.
