Tape Delay.

I’ve been messing around wth Tape Delay quite a bit over the last while.

Though I’m not always sure what exactly is going to happen, you can get some really cool “flam” type rolls with it. I’ve been using on individual hits - things like snares, claps, hats - anything.

Pretty sure that I can hear it on synths in loads of tracks -  as a flamming sound, rather than a delay-delay-delay.

Adam Beyer’s track Antistius has one on the offbeat hats between 2 & 4.

Not sure what the equivilent is in Live - but heres the ballpark settings in the photo in the simple delay. Hit the Sync/Time button in the Simple Delay - so that TIME is selected. That seems to make it not a “delay”, but a Flam.

The Tape Delay is Mono in Logic - but anything goes, whatever sounds good is good. Its best to tweak in realtime, while the track is playing. Using the % Groove control to get it sounding fkd’up.

You can get some pretty mental sounds from it. Turning it 100% wet can sound cool. Try moving the Midi in your arrange to get it hitting where you want. Add more reverbs / fx etc…

Anyway - these are the general settings:

Go mad. Automate. Experiment.

Thanks for that - been looking into some tape delaying myself heres some free ones whicjh have not got into yet

cheers slender!

I know - i will try the DUB SIREN as the dubstep and reggae folks seem to rate it

Heres a usefull site

Slender likes the Noise Maker.

Yeah NoiseMaker is a great little synth which I use quite a lot for warped up pads and leads

Here is some thing I been playing around with - using mda dub delay with automation - you need to turn the vol up as its just a project so not mixed

Nothing too mind blowing here: But the overall impression / message that I get is that you are on your own for the most part Guys!

Experimentation, time & practice makes perfect.

More… Eh… Erm… What was it… Oh, Yeah… Delays.

Heres something that I found online that I like the sound of & will give it a try later:

It says for Logic Plugins - But the principal applies to anything. The Echo Plug in Logic is a very simple (Basic Feature) Delay unit.

The principal could be applied to any DAW

Attached is a .pst for the Stereo Delay Plug in Logic. It’ll give you a Ping Pong Delay starting point (apparently - havent tried it yet  )

I’ve just included the Pics so that anyone who doesnt have Logic can see what the Plugs look like. The Settings are totally random. Dont copy them :hehe:

One of my favorites is a combination of two Logic plugins: Echo (in the delay list) and Tremolo (set to autopan, of course). Open Echo first on a bus and send your dry signal to the bus. Set echo as desired but with the effect set to 100% wet. It will play back in mono. Put Tremolo on the bus after Echo. Move the time dial to the left and select the desired tempo-sync setting. You’ll know what you want when you hear it. You can then tweak the curve of the autopan by going with smoother panning or hard panning. Have fun. This setup sounds better than many paid plugins!

There is no reason why you shouldn’t use more than one delay plug in. Send to two different busses panned left & right with different delay plug-ins at different settings. Have a simple reverb plug-in after each one so the left delay is in a different space to the right. While your at it add some chorus or ensemble effect to the reverb … etc, etc, etc

The key point is that a PingPong delay has a single feedback time for both taps, you have two and that’s why it is hard to balance.

To use the Logic Stereo delay as a PingPong delay you must have the same feedback time on both left and right channels, but one channel must be later than the other to get the Ping Pong effect. You therefore set the feedback on one of the channels, I call this the Pong channel to zero, it will now produce a single repeat. Then set the crossfeed on the other channel, I call this the Ping channel, to 50%. Now you have one feedback time for both taps. The feedback setting on the Ping channel, the one with the crossfeed, will control the number of repeats. Now the Pong channel delay time will be that of the Ping channel + its own delay time setting, you therefore want its delay time setting to be less than that of the Ping channel, so that it occurs before the next Ping channel repeat. If you set the Pong channel delay time to half that of the Ping channel the effect will be an even bouncing between the speakers. Other ratios like 0.75 also seem to work well.

In addition you need to think about the input setting, in most cases L + R makes the most sense for the setting I just described for reasons which are obvious. The Crossfeed level will control the level of the Pong channel, you typically want both channels to be the same volume and 50% seems to acheive this.

Not really easy to explain, so try the attached Logic Stereo delay setting for a simple 4th note PingPong delay and you’ll see what I mean. You could use this as a template for creating any PingPong delay.

Mess around with the Groove settings in Stereo Delay.

Messing around with the Ping Pong Delay on stuff was pretty cool.

You can get a groove going which is really interesting.

Lives one provides more instant satisfaction than the Logic one. Gonna have to look out for some Free PPD’s for Mac & see how they compare.
