Someones on the Blob.
jjdejong0 (25/10/2010)
I also think a good idea for sonic is to step away from this minimal/techno garbage i would like to think people wanna learn how to make music, with emotion, melody, harmony etc not just 7 minutes of a kick drum and random electronic noises.
It seems to me you are clearly narrow minded in your taste of music, and just because you may not understand minimal/techno to call it garbarge just goes to prove this.
I am no fan off house or trance but still watch the tuts as I have an interest on how different genres are constructed and able to put some of those methods in my own productions
Glad I resurrected this thread! LOL
I see minimal house and trance as different varieties of the same fruit anyway. So imo all the tuts on these genres are kinda in the same bag.
In that respect the distribution of genres is grossly weighted in the house field. Nothing wrong with these genres I add, just that from a tutorial point of view some non house based genres would be a significantly more interesting learning experience.
Unfortunately as these are the more popular genres naturally more people will want them, but kinda makes my heart sink when I see people screaming out for Deep house, melodic house and big room house tutorials with a stream of +1s when I’d love something a bit more eclectic or diverse.
Laughably people complain that there are only X trance tutorials and Y House ones.
1 Dub Step
1 Drum & Bass
That’s it for breakbeats.
I’m not levying the blame at SA here really as they respond to the most common requests I suspect.
For example the Nu Gaze one I thought was a great surprise, something totally different.
To Slender/ICN i was only joking lol, but you are kinda throwing this on people in every thread…
And i make no excuses for it but i really think minimal is absolute garbage theres just… such a lack of anything.
Ah we’re all messing Mate - its cool
What do you mean throwing? Like the whole HTSL / Avatar thing?
just you have alot of threads, you have a main one for posting youtube clips, another stickied one for production tips, a thread with the preview of the latest series of tutorials and now in a thread of new ideas for sonic you guys are posting more youtube clips on a similair genre. Meanwhile people who are asking for a trance tutorial basically get told to shut up not ask anymore and the people asking for other genres simply get ignored like some other poster mentioned the main room house thread with all the +1 no reply. It just seems a bit unfair.
To be fair we have put a lot off time and effort into our threads and when ICN and myself chatted before we even started we had no idea how much the thing would grow. maybe if the other guys and gals put as much effort as we do/did they may get the same result.
You will also notice we never constantly asked Phil or Bryan for a mnl/techno tut or started differnt threads asking for the same thing.
The reason why the production thread was stuck is because it has helpfull tips not only for techno but can easily be transfered to other genres
As for th HTSL thread those who are into techno find it a great source of inspiration and a place to hear new tunes.
Maybe if others a take a leaf out of our book you too can drum up the same enthusiasm which I would wholy support, as I beleive this forum is one of the only music related forums that this sort of thing can be acheived
Whats stopping you Guys doing the same?
Jeez… Organise yourselves if you want something. You saw how we did it. No secret.
Why not pool the knowledge that you have in the meantime while you’re waiting for your tut? Give something back. Wayne started doing a few Vids… and guess what - Not one person said “oh, you’ve got a thread about something else somewhere else.”
Get involved. Allow everyone to have their own space. We (Tech People) have done nothing but support you guys in your efforts.
We never went looking for another tut. We wanted one, made that clear, but after that were more than happy to let it happen whenever it happened.
If ye all put as much effort into it as y’all moan & whinge - then you’d all be great fellas.
We’ve got a YT Thread which is full of new releases. We’ve got a Production tips thread AND we’ve also done a Mix. Copy us if you have no ideas of your own.
Its a community. Help one another out. Thats what we’ve been doing. Its cool.
In reality my gripe isn’t so much the lack of interesting genres, though it is in part.
I’m not even seeking tutorials in a specific genre, just more diversity in what genres that are made, should I start threads for every other genre there is?
Anyway, joking aside, the second and main part of my gripe is the people that keep asking for more housey type tutorials, which is the bit I find baffling really. Is the minimal one not enough to make the leap into tech minimal etc or whatever renaming of house/techno they might have.
I am interested in learning as diverse a range of skills possible, and am more over just disappointed that this doesn’t seem to be the case for more people.
I tried it didnt catch on and the one htsl trance thread was getting big but bryan posted and told everbody to stop asking i dobt remember them doing tht to you.
No one said anything to us - cos we all just had a great laugh with one another & everyone was into it. It was a real positive thing.
AND - We never once - not once - resorted to emotional blackmail or throwing the toys out of the pram.
If your guys arent giving you the support & you keep moaning all the time - what do you expect?
C’mon - a little bit of maturity & dignity is need here Guys. Its the internet, but SURPRISE!! the same rules that we live by in life apply here too.
Anyway - Hope y’all get your Tut. Theres little more that we can say about this tbh.
pfffft trance. pffft minimal.
I wanna know when my damn polka tutorial is coming out.
WTF SA! you promised!
LOL
So other than house, trance, techno, breaks what else would you find interesting or useful?
NuGaze was cool to do but i wasnt 100% happy with the results would have liked to spent more time researching it.
I love a very wide range of music and finding researching any of the genres interesting.
Well I know I put trance with house, which to people into those genres probably is insane.
But breakbeat based genres (to my ears at least) can be more varied from each other so I still think there is plenty to cover such as :
Hip Hop (or Crunk, dirty South etc)
Trip Hop / Broken beat etc
2 step/Grime
Nu Skool or Rave Breaks
Beyond that, Italo disco, reggaeton, chill out, dub, soca, ghettotech, ambient, latin and funk etc.
I know many of these spill out of the ‘electronic’ domain, but my their influence on computer music is strong.
Obviously genres can be split infinitely, but I’m interested in learning new textures, rhythms, sounds, vibes etc from more or less any source, even classical and movie score type things.
All imo of course.
PHIL!
Another Dubstep or Dubstep Electro style would be awesome.
I see all the time people asking about glitching sounds… a tech tip for this would be perfect.
personally i want to get into the sub genres of what we already have especially techno AND trance as there are loads of sub genres of house already
would also like to see more on drum n bass and things like aphex twin, portishead and dub reggae

This and ambient
Tbh Phil an in depth advanced 2 part trance tutorial would make alot of people happy and prolly net you a few subscriptions. Wether its ureself or chris agnelli i dont think matters just something advanced no offence but the trance tutorial you have up now just isnt really that good and doesnt really sound like modern sounding trance. Also im not dissing anything that this techno minimal stuff but cmon you guys got a techno tutorial and now ANOTHER more in depth one whilst the trance boys hav got to make do with a tutorial that got made last year. On top of that when people start complaining asking for info on the new trance tutorial we get the answer from bryan ‘its out when its out’. Then in a thread for NEW ideas for Sonic you guys are in again posting youtube clips for more minimal/techno/tech house its just a bit of a slap in the face. Look at it from a business point of view i bet theres more people wanting to be the next armin van buuren then there is people wantin to be the next richie hawtin! I wouldnt mind so much mabey im being slightly biased because its genres of music that i really despise as a whole and each to there own but look at all the stuff you guys have got compared to people that may like more mainstream styles.
