Ouch!!!

I didnt enter the comp myself - so fair play to the Guy who won it…

Its ok as tips go - But I honestly dont think its the best / most interestng one I have ever seen, let alone the best that was on the Facebook page.

Thats feedback - not argumentativeness

Don’t care

But not the most interesting tip

i tought the one with the most votes was the winner?

actually watched it there

whats so wrong with that?

i never woulda thought of doing it

and it showed how to use resampling as well (which i wasnt sure about)

Place you bets to how long this thread stays up for

Already taken a screen dump to go along with Jon’s ‘leaving’ thread for posterity

To be honest, I’m not altogether surprised. Increasingly for me this site is not worth the price of my subscription. The promise is new content on a weekly basis. Recently content has been platform specific, and for beginners at that. That content is valuable, but should be added to the site in addition to more universal content on a weekly basis. Those ‘guide to your daw’ posts should be part of the library for newcomers, but are useless to the rest of us.

And then today. There is more useful stuff put on random you-tube channels on a daily basis. A bit weak really…

what do you expect to see?

Yeah +1.

Phil / Bryan are always listening and delivering to what has been asked, just make a request dude! What do you want/need?

i think its all down to what level your at. this site is second to none for beginners

Don’t be too harsh Mussi, there is the occasional Intermediate stuff thrown in

i was trying to be nice lol

It’s in the nature of a site like this that there will be stuff that is more relevant or less relevant to any one individual. However, 5 or 6 weeks in a row of DAW specific material guarantees a long period of content that is irrelevant to many subscribers, and if you already know how to use your DAW at a reasonable level, then the entire period contains nothing for you. This was the case for me.

Also, I get that not every week can be an extensive project, and therefore sometimes we get tech-tips, which typically contain some stuff that is old news for any given subscriber, and some stuff that is new, or at least provides a little inspiration… but come on, publishing one tip for a whole weeks content? It seems weak to me.

I think that if the guys are going to publish ‘how to use your daw’, or similarly non-universal content, it should be at the same time as other content. That way they build up a library of stuff that makes the site as a whole useful to new groups of subscribers, but also don’t leave others (for instance, me) feeling like my subscription is a waste of time. I think that it is good business sense, frankly.

Good point Man - hope you start posting a bit more on the forums

I’m not going to deny that is a very valid point.

There are 6 new tips in tech tips vol 9 as well

I would think that there has to be SOMETHING that one can do while the guys at SA produce more videos, right? For example, there are a plethora of video examples on how to build drums, bass, and leads, how to arrange, how to make a build/riser, in addition to the many styles the guys have surveyed as evidenced on the front page.

Practicing a musical skill, even if it seems mundane and boring at the moment, is a crucial yet rewarding requirement of all musicians if they expect gradual improvement and even more gradual success from their toils. Perhaps try to practice building a solid drum kit, even if you’ve done it hundreds of times before. Maybe study a style you aren’t really into from the videos. You might learn something in the form of a technique or a process that you might not have thought of prior, or maybe a synth parameter that always eluded you in some way.

I say this because the tone of the posts seem to say there isn’t anything else about a DAW one needs to learn at the present time, and that is a very dangerous way to think about the tools of the trade. There isn’t one person on these boards who knows everything there is to know about their DAW, all its components, all its plugs, and so on. It goes without saying that the issue of music itself is even more daunting when one considers the amount of knowledge one could acquire about it. I won’t even get into that…

While you wait for a video or other new content, you might consider opening a discussion with us here on the forums about one of the following topics:

  1. The benefits and pitfalls of using mid/side EQ to spread bass energy as a means to making room for a kick.
  2. Processing order when using EQ and compressors sequentially.
  3. Signal routing structure in Ableton’s “Operator” synth.
  4. Voice leading for great chord progressions.
  5. Melodic interest and scale structure.
  6. Orchestration techniques as related to foreground, middle-ground, and background.

    and so on…

Not everything has to be learned by a “How to do it” video. Practicing your musical fundamentals as well as drilling the skills you find in some of the seemingly “easier” or “intermediate” videos, and perhaps engaging in some chat here on the boards will provide great value for your subscription, I think. In fact, I’m so confident that you’d love it here (no matter how skilled you are), I woke up at 7 a.m. and made you your own tech tip video, assuming you use Ableton, of course.

This is the kind of community we have here…
