Thanks James! Just lightening the mood a bit in addition to sharing ideas.

Thanks for your efforts, JamieinNC. I’m actually a cubase user, but that’s a neat technique, and I could replicate something like it by using reaktor to automate fx sends. Wouldn’t be the same, but could be useful.
I know that theres a ton of material on here, but I’ve seen a lot of it, and much of what I haven’t seen, I don’t have an interest in (eg the early tuts with a lot of ‘now find a snare, now load the snare’).
There certainly is always more to learn about how to use ones DAW. But not for me in that last cubase tutorial. My point stands, I believe. There is a great forum here, but I pay the subscription for the vids.
I appreciate your attitude, however!
No problem, Ra!
Didn’t know you were a cubase user until now. How much different in operational characteristics is cubase from other DAWs like Logic or Ableton? I’ve never seen the interface nor the workflow style so I wouldn’t know.

What happened…oh I do that
Cool tip Jamie!
Wow,
Great stuff Jamie.
I am just curious, how long have you been doing this for (not your musical abilities, but your engineering ones), and how much time during the week you spend. Also, where do you learn most of your information from.
I only ask in order to get a gauge of how long it might take a person to reach the level of knowledge that you have. It could be of use to some of the newer members who are interested in seriously pursuing music as a career choice.
I think I can speak for everyone when I say, “we really appreciate your feedback.”

there you go roben, a fine example of something that isnt transferable to other daw’s all be it an interesting tip.
correct me if I’m wrong but you just cant do this in this way in the likes of cubase or logic right?

the ease of stuff like this is the reason why i switched back to ableton mate tbh
it does seem that a lot of the vids are quite ableton-centric and i used to find it hard to translate across from one daw to the other
Thanks Rob and Jbach,
I’ve been doing this for about two years or so. I also sit in front of my computer working on tunes or skills for about 4-6 hours a day, maybe more depending upon the situation. On weekends I’ll sit here all day like I did today, just working stuff out. I’m not in any rush to release anything, so it gives me time to really establish what I’m doing with the technology.
I teach music during the day; piano and other historical based classes in addition to music theory, so I don’t wrestle with that very much. I do, however, read and research as much as I can about music, composers, musical style, and the properties of sound related to light physics and such as it would relate to electronic music. I have taken several classes and subscribe to several sites besides this one, and when I go to a bookstore, I will pick up a few magazines and read any tips, tricks or processes about making music as I can.
It really is a balance of study and action. I read, listen, and watch others for clues and ideas all the time, and study properties of all the tools I can muster, like the advanced use of a compressor and training the ear to notice adjustments, or perhaps what needs to be adjusted. Same thing with EQ. I like studying FM synthesis, but much prefer subtractive if only because music really is all about excess reduced to the fundamentals. Things like this interest me. Helps me focus when I’m on Ableton trying to do something worthwhile.

I have no idea what one would do in Cubase, but I know it could be done with expert knowledge regarding Logic’s environment. I started out on Logic, and quite frankly I think the sound quality and processing characteristics are much better there than in Ableton. But for my workflow, I feel more productive and accomplished when I use Ableton simply because I can very easily create racks and set macros and tweak synth parameters. So on and so forth.
I do with Ableton would take a lesson from Logic with regards to automation curves and the like. Also, audio manipulation. So much easier in Logic than Ableton.

Jamie is a dog. Its 14 years actually
Umm…yes! That’s what I meant… (oops)
woof?

Nice Tip Jamie. I use Cubase too and some of the tips that they put on SA takes me some time to translate it on Cubase.
just you need to know how to use the plug ins in Cubase Properly IMO.
