Roland JP8000 for 1st Synth

As above, been offered one on the cheap, like £250 so wondering about it, anyone used one? I hear its good for trance is my thing.

Also I seen nord lead for £500 new, desktop which is interesting… this virus TI may have to wait.

I know nothing about hardware synths however… so any info would be ace like how the hell does it work with ableton and the piano roll, sound in and out of ableton, is it easy to save patched and change sound with hardware… how does it all work?

Howie? Anyone else?

Well dude, I know that things are alot more expensive in the UK, so I dont know how good of a price that is for you guys. Thats up to you. In regards to the choices, they are both good. They are both good for trance too. The JP8000 is analog, where the Nord is a virtual analog machine. Both nice, but I’m more of a analog guy.

Basically, you have your sound card. You would hook a 1/4" cables for the sound. 1 for mono, 2 for stereo. You will hook up midi cables from the synth to the Audio Interface. There will be two cables going into each. From there, its setting up your preferences in Ableton. Then, whenever you want to use your hardware, you just have to drag the “External Instrument” Ableton plugin to a midi channel. Then you do the routing. You tell Ableton where you want the midi to go and where to receive the audio. Its REALLY easy once you do it the first time. The only thing you have to get used to is that you cant take your sounds with you. So what I would do is make a multisample of any sound I do with my external gear and multisample it into Live for future projects.

I think the price is pretty good, well a virus ti is like £1500, so a JP is much cheaper so could be a nice little number.

So you cant save patched at all?

I have an audio knotrol 1

But I have a mic on the XLR which also doubles as a 1/4… I think I would need to hook up to both 1/4 which mean I couldnt have my mic in at the same time or buy a new sound card at which point it isnt to cheap!

Does that sound right to you mate>?

I picked up the rack version - the 8080 -  yesterday. I havent got round to trying it out yet. Sounded well trancy though! :D Its essentially the same unit, except its got a bit more poly (8 vs. 10)  & has a vocoder. Theres lots of knobs & sliders on it… even for the pitch envelope - so I cant wait to mess about with it. The only difference with the jp8000 is that the 8000 has a Ribbon Controller… which I think you can assign to any parameter for tweaking when playing.

They sell for stupid money Wayne - If you can pick one up at that price (or less) get it.

Its not analog I’m afraid - Its virtual analog too. You’d need 2 1/4 jacks available at all times using it Mate. You could save patches in the synth itself… and select them via the jp’s menu system. I’m not 100% if there is some way to do this through the computer (I know theres a lot of complicated code sh!t that I’ve never bothered to investigate - so who knows :w00t: - Maybe someone else could explain what sysex dumps & all that midi sh!t is actually about  ). But apart from that, doing multisamples like Howie said is another / best way if you want to share them or dont want to save in the JP / have the internal memory.

Its a no brainer - If its in good nick, you’ll definitely be able to get your money back on it, even 6mths / year down the road.

The JP’s sell for anything up to €700 here in Ireland. Whether you can shift one at that price or not, I dont know… but I’ve seen some snapped up closer to the €500 mark. Check the completed listings on Ebay for a realistic idea of how much they sell for, as thats the gauge that most people use to price things against.

well if they go for price over in ireland it really is a no brainer! better still be there on friday in that case

I seen some on ebay for like £375, but for HTFR also have a Nord Lead for £599 which is new, and very tempting!

I dont see myself needing to use my mic and synth at the same time so shouldnt be an issue… however looks like I’ll see a new soundcard if and when I want to expand… its all £££££ eh!

haha!

Yeah… they’re sought after - I think it would be a good buy. As long as its not totally wrecked like, you’ll get your money back.

Smell it. If its dirty from smoking etc… haggle him down… Tell him you have to sing into the mic at the same time & you’ll need to buy a new SC! LOL ;)

Let us know how you get on.

I think you will be pretty happy with the JD I had one a long while ago - nice pads and strings though a tad metallic - but at that price its a no brainer - oh it looks pretty cool too

Slender - You;ve got JD on the brain Mate… Its a Jp  :hehe:

Hmmmm…I thought the JP was analog. Oh well, whatever. It is still a good buy though. And Wayne, you can just keep what you have in the Audio Kontrol 1. You can just swap out the 1/4" cables depending on what you are inputting. And yes, the XLR dubs as your 2nd 1/4" stereo connection. You are good to go. i think you’ve made your choice dude, go grab it and learn it like your girlfriends vagine!

The jp is NOT analogue! It is also virtual analogue or analogue modelling. If you wanna make trance then this synth should make for a welcome addition! Also for 250 quid its a bargain as the JP has neen going up in price lately so go and get it!

Just to show:

I got my 8080 for €300 - Literally brand new in box.

The Power lead is even spotless (could be a new one, but its probably not  )… Not a single mark or bit of dust on it, nor a scratch from the rack screws.

You would honestly think its fresh from the factory. Really lucky to find one in such condition.

wait till the cat cr*ps on it

Me & the missus had the same conversation last night…

I said that I’d take the Cat out into the garden & kick her head off her body

The gasps of horror that ensued! :hehe:

Remember I want samples of the cats last screech

The JP8000 is the one you want for the classic trance supersaw.

@Slender

I’ll put a wind sock on the mic so that the flying head wont mess up the sound.

only thing that annoyed me about the jp was the envelopes… the curves on the attack and decay arnt as nice as the virus or sylenth.

Still a cool synth… had one for years… in fact i think its still kicking about somewhere.

just a thought, but you could always buy a small mixer instead of a large breakout box style sound card.

Would allow you to EQ the synth sound in the mixer rather then in the box.

OK so now it looking like it will cost me £400 as she has had another offer… so now the question beggs, JP 8000 for £400 or Nord Lead brand new for £599??

What do you all think??

Not really up on the Nords to comment Wayne… Seems like an excessive jump in price though.

Unless you really want it and its in pristine condition - Out of principal, I’d tell her to fkn ram it
