The best/most recent thing you've Learned?
Grzegorz (12/09/2011)
I dont have quite big experience with vocals. I needed to add ready vocals to some tune which was pretty crowdy. When I was equing the lead part i wasnt satisfied with the effect at all - I mean, sure the vocal was more recognized now but that shiny, nice lead went to the background too much.

It was the first time when I thought, how about M/S Equing ? And yea, I switched EQ from Stereo to M/S mode, cut some frequencies from MID (to make a space for vocal) but leave (or even boost) some Side Frequencies and the result was much better. The lead still was strong, noticeable but at the same time, vocal was audible too…

It’s funny because I knew about M/S Equing for a long long time but never actually used it and now when I finally used it for the first time, I was asking myself: what took me so long to discover it :D
good tip. I’ll be stealing that. haha.

Ive learned humanizing the beat is essential, and that programming the main beat into a sequencer and than isolating each channel of the sequencer for audio bounce on separate channels is good because you can play that one channel back in the sequencer and beat repeat stuff or stop stuff for a second, giving more human aspect, so a 4 bar always sounds different.

I find that making a 5 or 7 bar loop of something in 4/4… with slightly different velocities etc… and repeated out over the arrangement, really keeps it sounding like its different all the time.

Even getting something stretched out thats kinda odd… like a couple of bars & a 1/2, if you can get it to play what you want, it sounds good.

Especially if you have an autofilter, chorus, grainy fkn reverb going… sounds alive.

I’ve found that whacking a saturator preset on your drum group turns you into a techno god:)
