Whats up everybody. I’m posting this to try and make an official thread for the forum in order to get a bunch of support for Sonic Academy to make a new Electro/Glitch/Dubstep tutorial for us people here at SA.
I have done all the other tutorials for Electro, Fidget & Dubstep. But I would love to see a new tutorial or even just a short series about ways 2 combine the methods of all these different genres.
The biggest reason for me posting this thread is that I know I am not alone in my quest for this tutorial. Almost everyday somebody new posts a question about HTSL Skrillex, Wolfgang Gartner, Porter Robinson, Alex Mind, Felguk, Feed Me, Wobble, Crazy Dubstep Basslines and all that goes with it. There are a whole bunch more topics that I didn’t even touch on and hopefully some others will CHIME into the conversation and let me know what I missed.
Everybody that wants this kinda tutorial needs to keep this thread alive. Post up videos of electro or dubstep tracks that are inspiring you at the moment. or some of your favorite classics. Also if people have production tips or links to post & share… then by all means add that in here too.
And if for some reason that you just stumbled across this thread because you were LITERALLY just about to post up a HTSL thread regarding one of the topics I listed above, then PLEASE post in this thread with your support of a +1 or whatever you feel like adding to the cause.
something along these lines.
I’m definitely in support of this. Everyone seems to want to know how to make Skrillex’s basslines but I honestly think there’s so many more interesting things going on in his music.
oh yeah. i totally agree. Sonic Academy actually made a bassline resampling video that explains how to resample audio for dubstep bass lines. this is what skrillex does for his basslines. he’s also using massive. I’ve been practicing my dubstep & electro a ton over the past few months and I am getting better at it… but to your point, the bass is not the only thing that is important.
there are so many things going on his songs its not even funny.
my favorite skrillex song is this one. I’d love to get a better idea for how to get a track together like this:
OR
this… lady gaga sucks but this remix is sick.
i'm like 95% sure that Skrillex is using Melodyne on the vocals in both those tracks above.
+1 absolutely… I personally love the glitch effect and have been trying to figure out a way to do it as right now, i’m doing it the hard way. Where did you find out he was using massive?
+1. All i do is research how to get the robo vomit synth sound.
yesss please! +10000
I was literally just about to make a thread for this!
I just want to throw out a few quick tips out there for ye budding electro house producers such as myself:
- Don’t Go too Midrange
It’s really easy to fall into the main pothole of electro house; catchy midrange basslines. Everyone has them, right? Right. But if that’s all you make, you’re definitely at risk of losing a lot of stuff in the 60-150 kHz range. What I do for my glitchy electro basslines once the preliminary 8 to 16 bar loop is done is duplicate it and throw on a couple of filters; there’s a free MDA plug in called Sub-Bass which essentially fattens up the aforementioned range. Then, I sometimes use the Corpus plug-in in Ableton to get a subby, thudding bass. Then, I slap on a Hi-Pass that lops off everything below ~70 Hz so it’s not conflicting with the sub-bass of the kick. Doing this should really give your basslines the oomph that they need.
- Avoid the cymbal-work
Once again, it’s tempting to use a cymbal or two to tell your listener “here is the drop, it’s really big”. This sounds stupid, but the drop should speak for itself. Listening to any major glitchy electro song in the last 5 years, you will hear the same thing: kick-clap-kick-clap-kick-clap-kick-clap-clapclap over and over. The reason for this is because it avoids the problems associated with cymbals. They either override the entire thing and drown out your entire bassline, or they reduce the sparkle at the 10-15 kHz range from your bassline. Either way, it’s bad. Reserve them for break downs with few high frequency noises.
- Don’t be afraid to do a bit of sampling.
Look, I hate Steve Angello’s blatant use of “Capone Kit”. But I also happen to own both Future House Vol. 2 and 3. Obviously, your main sounds should be your own, but it’s really handy to have a couple decent saw wave sounds or bleeps that fill in the small gaps. It’s the use of these samples that brings a song from “meh” to “supar glitcheee”.
I use all of these little tips in this song, which I think is my most glitch-tastic:

If you guys have questions or comments please leave 'em. Always looking to get better.

Haha, word man. He’s got a lot of other stuff going on I’d really like to dive into. The post I made in the Skrillex forum (thanks for the response btw and I asked you one more question over there) asked how he did the bass, glitchy stuff, and the vocals and all anyone would ever respond with was BASS BASS BASS RAWR BASS!!!
I’m totally down with supporting this.
Also, I know everyone likes to poo on the mau5, but he has some interesting glitchy stuff during the Dubstep half of Raise Your Weapon.
Some of Mr Wolfgang Garner:
i can’t get enough of wolfgang gartner. IMO best electro producer at the moment hands down.
illamerica is sooo sick. also firepower & undertaker make me go nuts.
his album coming this year is going to be insane. can’t wait 2 hear it.
J.HiZ (06/01/2011)
+1 absolutely… I personally love the glitch effect and have been trying to figure out a way to do it as right now, i’m doing it the hard way. Where did you find out he was using massive?
he’s using massive because of the “Modern Talking” oscillator that the Massive synth has.
check out this video. sound2sample just recently did a tutorial on how to do it with massive.
what he is doing after that video is resampling whatever sound a whole sh*t load of times adding effects each time, refining it over and over again until you get the Scary Monsters & Sprites sound. basically watch that video and the video for bassline resampling that Sonic Academy did and you will know how to do the crazy skrillex bass.
also if anybody is working on a PC there is a pretty sweet FREE vst called Glitch.
Check it out here:

see my post above. check out that video in my post.
if you watch that video… and
watch the Bassline Resampling videos on sonic academy that are here:
http://www.sonicacademy.com/Producer/Course//Tech_Tips_-_Volume_6.cid3847
then you won’t need to research anymore about how to do it… because THAT is how 2 do it.
resampling takes time. It’s a trial & error kind of thing. it is going to take hours of practice to get it right.
hope that helps anybody that is wondering how to do it!

+1 to everything Flaxo said. and If I was you I’d listen cause the guy’s music is good!
dubVision (07/01/2011)
also firepower & undertaker make me go nuts.
If you like Undertaker, check out Kaskade’s Steppin’ Out Undertaker mashup. It’s free on his SoundCloud (He puts a new free song up every “Music Monday”).
It’s a great version and actually the song that got me started with Wolfgang Gartner.
DL @ bottom of Page 2
yeah I heard that remix as well on kaskade’s soundcloud page… it is good stuff man.
The first time I heard of wolfgang was at Summer Massive in Baltimore.
Kill the Noise played undertaker and I was like “Who the hell is this?”
Honestly i don’t think i have heard a bad Wolfgang song or thought it needs improving!
anyway +1 on the thread.

Might as well add this one, too!
