Top level

right ok guys, just another random curious NOOB question!

lets say you put the time and effort in, got all the tools and produce an absolute bomb, in whatever genre preference. top quality production, at home. what would happen next? how would it work out for ya? what would be the next step?

for starters the first thing you would need to avoid if you’ve made a bomb of a track is Myspace, soundlcoud, facebook or anything else that you can post your track on. most big record labels are not gonna take a track that’s all over the web

next step would be to pay for the best mastering service you can afford and don’t except the track back until you are 100% happy with it.

once you are happy with your mastered track pick 2 or 3 labels and send them a copy. don’t forget to drop your track into your audio editor and add some random fades, this way if your track gets leaked in any way it will never be playable in a dj set

once you have a label that’s prepared to take your track talk money and read the contract before sending the full unfaded version…

What Jon said, however…

If you have a connection that you can trust, you dont have to do the fade thing. You can also add a high pitch squeal in specific places in the track.

On the part of mastering though, I believe that you should absolutely NOT pay for mastering of your own track. Any major label will want to do their own mastering and run it through their own engineers. All you need to do is run it through Ozone to make it louder. Look at the previous topic on mastering…

Everything else Jon said, I would go with…

If it was me I’d put all over myspace, blogs, youTube, and sound Cloud in high quality and with pictures :stuck_out_tongue:

Value of a huge track no one knows = 0

However get the exposure, fan base and generate interest in to your music and you’re well on the way to become huge producer on the back of that track!

Of course you can try labels, but for that track to have a maximum impact it needs to be a GOOD label, one that can get your track promoted, with right connections, etc

There are hundreds of ‘labels’ that can put your music on to the stores, but what’s the use of that if they not going to promote it?

You can end up with potentially huge track, being tied to carp label that have no will/resources to promote it.

Anyway, I’m not gonna go in too much detail, you get the idea of my point of view.

So to answer your question, unless you’re prepared to do some really hard work promoting it and getting it heard, or you can find someone who will, nothing will happen.

you have some good points, a track does need promoting but this should be left to the record label and dj’s. no big label is going to take a track thats already being given away for free.

Absolutely 100% true. The OP said, “what if you have a hit?”. Even if you have a hit, and you post it on the social networking sites so everyone can hear it, your track will go nowhere. In the end, its the label’s money too. You need to pick out the biggest labels and send it to them only.

So unfortunately Seanl, if you do what you say you would do, unfortunately, no label will want to touch your music. Believe it too…they check! When I post on soundcloud, its just remixes and projects that are in their infancy. Never stuff that is over 50% done.

some interesting points, sound like a catch 22 to me! dammed if you do dammed if you dont.

if you were just starting out i would get some stuff out there and get some feedback just to see what people think and how things might be improved. may be under a different alias or something

when you feel more confident about your music then take the more secretive route to protect it

not many people have a smash hit with their first track/song, but also there are a few people who have become famous through social networking sites and the likes of youtube etc. its a tough one

nothing wrong with building a song data base on soundcloud to get a following, if you really have something potentially that great though its best left to the record label to promote it.

if someone is willing to promote you and put money (label) behind you than absolutely, it’s an ideal situation! let them run the show, especially if lucky enough to get on to a descent label…if you not so lucky than internet is your second best option, and you don’t need to give away your music, you can do a cheeky bootleg or remix, even mashup to get some attention…

In UK little boots started with some covers on You Tube…

but basically choose the best option to get your music heard…sometimes one person can be enough…ideally Pete Tong :stuck_out_tongue:

wel remember my name boys!!! na man. interestin stuff guys. thanks for the replies!

Quite a few artists have became known from the internet actually.

Lilly Allan is most famous for it but there are countless others.

i totally agree with him . if you are not a well know producer you will need to make a  name from yourself.

soundcloud.com  is a great way to meet contacts and record labels that are able to release your tracks . there tons  of producer out there and just sending demos will not make it unless you know personally the record label owners  .

Now there tracks that you practice or you are not happy with it what you need to do is to . let people dowload it for free! **** it !! . if your are good enough you will have enough followers from labels managers to club promoters that will listen your music .

when you are ready to release your heavy weapons   you will already made a relationship with your contacts. you will already have labels offering your releases because of your relatioship stablished when you were practicing or trying with your free music …  what you need to do then is to choose the best know label because believe it or not if you are good people will listen .

nowadays we need to be realistic and agressive in this market. there is good and bad producers and music  .

and how you are going to know if your song is hit while nobodie listened your track?maybe our tracks souds good to you but for the rest of the world might sound horrible .

like i said it takes exposure and lets remember that we have to start from the bottom

alinenunez +1

example: imagine that you push your music locally, you don’t have to be to aggressive or spam , just find like minded people, and if they digg what you’re doing than perhaps they would turn up for a gig one day…

…it’s great start! It makes talking with clubs/promoters much easier, it also shows you in completely different light to 20 million of other wanna be DJs/producers that just expect things to happen for them

or to put it in different perspective…find 2500 people that dig your music globally and are willing to spent a £10 on your music/merchandise/etc a year and you are making a living out of your passion

you really think lilly allen and the rest got famous just cos of the net…? im sure her dad being on the bbc every weekend and her step dad being harry enfield didnt hurt.

as for the rest, kate nash and the “wish i was a punk rocker” one, all had label interest before they touched the net. the “famous from the net/myspace” thing was/is just another clever spin by the label suits.

something for alastair stewart to “oh and now what a wonderful story” bs publicity stunt you see everyday on london tonight (local news show) (alastair stewart = total nob (sic))

so they say, if you honestly buy that story and not the fact that her dad was a well known actor lol

great thread

Well I don’t know guys, I’m just going from what i’ve heard, I didn’t know her dad is an actor, who is he?

Who’s that blonde chick, looks in her 30’s who won awards last year and was also in a couple of coke adverts, one of the adverts she’s riding a bike singing. She’s got this really rusky old skool sounding voice.

Can’t remember her name as i’m not good with chart people, apparently she got known from internet too.

Also there is that really yound lad, looks about 15 who everyones raving on about, he’s from america? He got famous from youtube videos apparently.

Sorry I’m crap with commercial artist names lol.

Anyways, i don’t think it’s fair to knock the power of internet self promotion.
