Since there are many many many… Can you name 3 that started online? I’m curious for my own personal knowledge.
roben (07/04/2010)
Well I don’t know guys, I’m just going from what i’ve heard, I didn’t know her dad is an actor, who is he?

Who’s that blonde chick, looks in her 30’s who won awards last year and was also in a couple of coke adverts, one of the adverts she’s riding a bike singing. She’s got this really rusky old skool sounding voice.
Can’t remember her name as i’m not good with chart people, apparently she got known from internet too.

Also there is that really yound lad, looks about 15 who everyones raving on about, he’s from america? He got famous from youtube videos apparently.

Sorry I’m crap with commercial artist names lol.

Anyways, i don’t think it’s fair to knock the power of internet self promotion.
her dad is a comedy(?) actor called keith allen (bit of a dck imo but anyway). her step dad is a guy called harry enfield, very famous british sketch show actor from the 80’s and 90’s and 00’s. she was even in afew films herself when she was younger. keep an eye out for her in Elizabeth with cate blanchet. (good film btw)

the blondes name is Duffy. she was found by rough trade records and promoted heavily (as they all are etc etc ). am i cynical to think she wouldnt have made it without the amy whinehouse factor? anyway…

dont know who the boy is but you can bet your bll*cks theres someone big behind him. (no pun intended):w00t:

its been said before but the truth is unless you or your family knows someone in the industry, youve got to be EXTREMLY lucky to make it.

its all about WHO you know… not WHAT you know.

Just Googled him, I do recognise him, he’s actually really good as the sherriff of nottingham in the series Robin Hood, used to love watching that. Of course i know harry enfield!! Used to watch his sketch show all the time and kevin and perry go large is one of my fav films

Ah yes Duffy, that’s the one! There was all this big hype that she came out of no where cos of the internet, to be honest, loads of new artists these days seem to be found on the internet.

I think there needs to be a careful play of how you work the industry with your music, what Howie and Jon said before is spot on, however, you need to be heard to be known, also collecting your own personal fan base helps big time!

Maybe it’s worth just putting up short clips of your music and not ALL your music, like all your best stuff, you keep off for example. Give people tasters of what you’re about.

Surely that can only be a good thing?

Who’s that famous band who were giving away all their music for free on their website with the option to donate if you wanted too.

There’s a really interesting artical in a recent Computer Music Special - How to Make It In Music which goes on about a lot of the stuff mentioned in this thread, interesting read if any of you manage to get hold of a copy!

It’s the BIG question these days, do you charge for your music or do you give it away?

Check this out: bit.ly/OTUHr

There is a part in it from Nine Inch Nails ‘Trent Reznor’ who put forward a pretty strong argument for going exclusively down the free route in it. I quote: “Forget thinking you are going to make any real money from record sales. Make your record cheaply (but great) and GIVE IT AWAY. As an artist you want as many people as possible to hear your work. Word of mouth is the only true marketing that matters.”

Whilst in the Computer Music Special it states: “Ultimately, it’s up to you, but it’s worth bearing in mind that if you don’t give at least some of your tunes away, you really will be swimming against a pretty strong tide.”

Oh and another big band who ‘apparently’ came out of the internet: Arctic Monkeys.

So what have we learned about all this?

Well it’s all contradictory and majority of the information leaves us some what more confused than before we questioned.

My thoughts? Well… splicing a bit of both is prolly the best option, give some away, keep some of your best, build a fanbase, stay professional, stay level headed and try your best to keep ahead of the game.

True, but it’s WHAT you know that KEEPS you there.

i agree with you here. even the pimp of the celebrity world says something like that too… max cliffird said you can give as much publicity as you want to someone, on all channels, on the radio and tv interviews but at some point their product has to stand up to it… and if you havent got the product, no amount of publicity and keep you there.

thats why we see these flash in the pan one “hit” wonders coming and disappearing just as quick.

i know someone thats signed a deal, theyve just put some of their work on their myspace page. i think its quite excellent. have a listen.

http://www.myspace.com/diagramoftheheart

i think the tracks on there have “hit” written all over them. id be very surprised and abit worried if these guys dont make it big. dont know when the albums out, next time i see him ill ask.

i couldn’t name that many big artists that got signed from their myspace or soundcloud.

i guess maybe more have in recent months but none really ring a bell to me. wolfgang, preve, Mau5, Katana and many of the other big names spent years sending out demos before they got their break.

as for the lily allen thing, i’ve read so many stories where she has said it was her myspace then her podcast then it was through sending demos. i mean come on girl if you’re gonna lie at least keep it consistent lol

@op,if you dont have any real experience mastering audio, then like jon said have it mastered by a professional, make sure its someone that has experience with the sort of music you make.for example if youre doing “nu-disco”, house or techno (in any of their forms) then i cannot recommend

http://www.schnittstelle.ws/Schnittstelle_-_Vinylschnitt_%26_Mastering.html

enough. once signed a lot of labels handle the mastering for you or in some cases insist on it,i suggest still getting it done by someone you trust, someone thats taking their cues from you.dont waste your time with volume fades throughout the song and other things of that nature mentioned in this thread (thats just pointless)

once youre contacted, you normally exchange a few calls, talk some b.s.,then move on to money, they always try to roll the ball in your court, your really want to do your best to pass it back, just ask for them to outline a deal memo for you.

also im not so sure about not putting music up on social networking sites,a few years ago('05 i think) i started getting contacted/signed because of a track i had in my myspace player(the only one btw,put one great one in there only, you will always be asked to send another 1-3 songs along with whatever song they supposedly want to release,by not having all your new music constantly being put out there you can make sure you get to push even the songs that are kind of old to you but still new to everyone else)now i just put up 1.5 min clips of whatevers scheduled to be released usually 2 weeks before it comes out on beatport, juno and some other sites that dont really matter.

like 4-5 years ago mau5 was always on the myspace forums trying to push some prydz/swede mafia knockoffs and calling himself a dj(that got him flamed quite a bit on there),something he complains about being called these days in his interviews, well actually 90 percent of what he says in interviews is fictitious.i actually liked a couple of those tunes and started talking to him regularly on there because it was sort of refreshing to hear something fairly decent from someone on a myspace forum in those goldrush years, back when everyone thought they were going to get a deal through myspace

mau5 is full of it when he claims to have sent demos out for years.he had friends that put him on,now im not knocking his production talents when i say that,he wouldve made it eventually without their aid and still be huge, but it definitely sped things up quite a bit.back then he was a bit of a name dropper whenever pushed into a corner in those old dance music forum flamefestivals.

you really think he woulda made it without his friends. its possible of course but i doubt it. just cos hes good at production doesnt mean he woulda made it at all… sadly… :(  you cant tell me there isnt a guy out there that is absolutely the shizzle. he just aint got the contacts

you know that “new” track Im in Miami b*tch… by “LMFAO”… good track well the remixes are gd… you know who these 2 guys are related to…?

one is Berry Gordys son… and the other is Berry Gordys nephew… yes THE Berry Gordy of Motown fame.

not what you know, its who you know  lol

AGAIN…

Don’t all be so negative, keep pushing for what you believe in, you may not know anyone now or have anyone related in the industry but that does NOT mean you wont get anywhere with your music.

Believe in yourself.

Believe in yourself.
that is true. but you have to be extremely lucky or make moves for yourself ;)  getting to know people etc etc

im lucky as i do know people in the industry. just gettin my shizzle together before i put it out there.
