Utility phase inversion

Anybody know how to use Live’s utility plugin to get two duplicated tracks to cancel each other out so that you can make precision eq cuts?

Trying to follow a computer music mag tutorial and they say to use Live utility plugin, but they don’t tell you how!

I figured it out! The track has to be an audio track. So if you want to do it to a midi track, you have to flatten the track first.

could you explain a bit more about the technique? what it does? why are you using it? sounds like something worth learning

No probs! It’s a technique for making more precise eq cuts/boosts. If you duplicate an audio track, then drop the “inverted” utility preset on the duplicate track it should playback silent. Now drop your favourite eq on the original track. When you sweep the eq band all you will hear is the boosted signal, making it easier to hone in on the offending frequency.

nice one Gav… thanks!

will give it a shot

Nice tip gav! Claim it as your own man

Basically you just duplicate an audio track, grab the utility preset “invert”, drop it on the duplicate track. You should now get silence. Now drop your eq plugin on the first track. Now when you make a narrow boost all you Will hear is the frequency that you boosted, not all the frequencies of the sound. This helps you to concentrate on the problem frequency without the rest of the sound distracting you.

Its a good method but try Fabfilters Pro-Q with the new Frequency Isolation tool, u can select any type of eq shape (bell, low pass etc) then hit the little headphones and you only hear the freqs you put the band on, awesome for clinical EQ

i’ve been wanting to get fabfilter Q ever since watching gofunk’s tutorial on EQing a trance track a while back…

As for the FabFilter Q it sounds like it’s worth getting? Do you need a dongle to use it or do you register through a license key?

EDIT: Found the videos they were Wayne (gofunk) posted them in the tips & tricks forum. if anyone else is interested in watching them the youtube links are below!
