hey, a label says they want to sign my track, they said they want me to send them the track as mp3 320 (whats that?:S) and .wav, is there anyting eles im suposed to do? like export the parts or anyting? didnt not expect any label to take an interest!!
and sud i send it unmastered???
Send them the 320k mp3 file and then wait for them to send you a contract before you send them the .wav or the parts.
i just take my .wav form of my song and export it from audacty is that the 320 version?:S ok thanks roben;) will i not master it?
I wouldn’t worry about mastering it. They have already heard the song and want to sign it in it’s current state.
Out of curiosity, who is the label. Do they get many sales on beatport & do they have any “well known” people on their label.
Reasearch the label as well to make sure their not dodgy.
Apologies if you are getting a serious offer from a nice big label though.
sounds a bit sketchy, have you chatted with them on the phone yet?
Don’t worry it’s probs genuine, just do a bit of research, google them.
Try this wav to mp3 converter, it’s free but to be honest i’ve never used this one:

Otherwise I use one called ‘Ogg converter’ which i’d swear by, check it out if you like.
dont listen to roben.worry!most approaches made this way dont end well.normal correspondence goes a little like this:
1.you receive an email, complimenting you and expressing “some” possible interest in releasing a particular song of yours.theyll ask a little bit about you(basic bio and discog stuff)
2.you respond and express some interest.
3.exchanging phone numbers and setting up an appointment for a call/conference call
4.youve talked, feel a bit more comfortable with each other and have gone through the basic outline of the deal they are offering(they’ll do their best to leave the ball in your court, especially if youre new, keep rolling it back into theirs).they now ask you to send them a copy of the track along with 2-3 other songs to find 1-2 that may possibly accompany it on an ep.(they may have asked for a mp3 of the song that originally sparked their interest prior to the deal memo)
5.you agreed to their outline and sent them the songs.they pass on the song they initially expressed interest in and opt for 2 of the newer ones you sent along for possible consideration for the ep.
6.you sign the full deal, send them the unmastered waves at the requested sample rate(if you do not do your own mastering)
7.once release is finished and submitted allow 5 weeks to be released on beatport.
this is basically(without going to far into detail) how it usually goes down when they find you out of nowhere,at least for me it was.

Just out of curiousity, what kind of deal did they give you? What kind of percentage did you get? And did you get any kind of advance?
Obviously, it could be private, so sorry for asking and dont feel obligated to answer.
Thanks…

not every deal is the same, that said,on that original deal i did get 500 pounds upfront, non exclusive,60/40 split(which didnt equal much since it was a vinyl and digi release),they had the rights to the songs for 18 months with the option to extend for an additional 12 or something along those lines,it was quite a while back.i had put out some breakbeat stuff on vinyl prior so when they basically asked how much do you get?i was just like 500.i dont think they realized i meant dollars at the time nobody was paying more than a couple hundred bucks stateside anymore so i got extremely lucky.also their a&r girl at the time was a nice bonus.
It doesn’t always work like that bobby, every label is different and if a label has genuinly expressed interest then it doesn’t automatically mean they’re dodgey. Obviously you want to check them out and obviously you don’t give them your .wav / parts till you see a contract, but you shouldn’t just pass off something just purely on the basis it didn’t go according to your list.

I agree with you Bobby . I heard experiences where people send tracks to the labels before signing the contract.
here it what might happen
a label send you a contract . now if the label send you the contract without them signing first . then u might have some issues.
it will be like the Label will grab you from the balls .
u will not be able to release the same track with other labels because u might be still expecting the release date and the signed Contract from the label .
u will loose money . and if they come back telling you that they will not sign you in anymore ( probably after 8 months) they will post your masters to the Blogs and other sites that allow free downloads for music .
there is alot of issues. not only that but they will waste your time
so yeahh dont listen Roben
Jk
but remember that they need to send you the contract first before u send them the tracks.
they aproached you and I am sure they want your track . but sometimes in the Music Industry you have to be very patient
Trust me

dont send him a wav, send a 192mp3.see where it goes from there.dont ask about "money contracts etc?"just send him the mp3 and see what his response is.
but why is the .wav form of the track so important?
deanmau5 (18/08/2010)
but why is the .wav form of the track so important?
because they want to master it . just wait for the contract dude . dont get excited and send your wav yet
For me, it’s showing interest for me as an artist and sending me a contract this morning. Nothing serious just having a read XD. I’m intrigued though to why I would be of interest when I haven’t made an original track yet, only bootleg remixes? Surely I’m of no use to record labels. Unless they can get rights to my bootlegs and then release? confused
who are the label and what other tracks have they released?
which other artists do they have on their label?
website?
Promotion tactics?
Get as much info on them as you can, if nothing comes up to scratch ask for money upfront. if they can’t deliver artists, sales or a decent release and they are not prepared to pay you up front then they have nothing to offer you and are not gonna benefit you i any way what so ever.
