Hey everyone, I am making some tutorials here and there for the Sonic Academy community (hopefully). I had a bunch of tutorials that I have planned to show (I just need to get the time to do them and edit them), but I need your help as well.
As you might know, I am most proficient with Ableton Live. I wanted to know, is there anything that you want to see me do? Is there something you don’t understand? Is there something you would like me to delve in a little further? I would like your input.
Thanks!
i think even if all of us basically understood compression, delay, reverb, eqing
it would be cool do do it more detailed.
like p.ex. in which order you should put them into an insert channel? why?
and how to correctly set up an reverb and find your best settings for it…?
pro /contra - send and insert channel…
also talking about mixdown and why headroom is important…
otherwise some basic in soundsynthesis, where to start with it…

How to pull jenna jameson?
it would be nice to see some programming in Max , i would like to learn to make my own tools if is not too much asking :P.

Sorry, I own Max for Live, but I only use it for the tools that others have made. I, personally, would rather spend my time making music, not the tools to make music.

This. Especially on EQ’ing using just live’s plugins

I could do a little of this.
cortiorgan (24/05/2010)
like p.ex. in which order you should put them into an insert channel? why?
I could show a bit of this too. But its pretty simple.
cortiorgan (24/05/2010)
and how to correctly set up an reverb and find your best settings for it…?
I can’t tell you this. You are gonna have to use your ears for this. No one can show you this for every example. You will always do something different depending on the application.
cortiorgan (24/05/2010)
pro /contra - send and insert channel…
Do them both and see what you like the sound of better. If you have a short reverb and you are putting it on a bunch of channels to create space, put it on a return. The dry/wet knob is like like the send return knob. Keep the dry/wet on the reverb set to 100%. This has been explained in past videos.

So you don’t digitally clip audio. Digital clipping sounds horrible. Please read Bob Katz’s book http://www.amazon.com/Mastering-Audio-Second-science-Book/dp/0240808371/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1274725747&sr=1-1 and do a little learning about mastering audio. You will understand alot more if you spend some time and read and learn about audio rather then someone showing you just one thing in a video.

I might dive a touch into this, but I’m not teaching synthesis. I’m wanting to see what people want to know about Ableton specifically. Not sound design. When I get done with my sound design course, perhaps I can fill in a bit more of the empty spaces that SA needs me to make videos for.
using ableton to sync up a vocal (maybe even correct the key if possible)
show plus an minus reasons for using both impulse and drum rack for making beats

Well, I would never repitch a vocal more then 1 or 2 semitones. Anything more then that, you will get an artificial sound.

I was waiting for this to come up. I will just explain it real quick. With drum racks, you get a full simpler for manipulating your sounds. You don’t have the full control. With impulse, you get saturation added in to the instrument, but you lose alot of control. I don’t really want to do sound comparisons, because in the end, if impulse sounds good to you, then use it. I just find it quite limiting. There is a slight sound difference (from what I have been told from Fran) but I could care less. I just use racks for control reasons. Not to mention, that with impulse, you have some crazy routing to do and everything. Drum racks is basically creating a complete drum bus for you in the background. But as you can see in the tutorials done by Phil, if you want to add reverb to the snare only (for instance), it becomes a pain in the neck because you have to create a new track and route the sound into the track, etc. Why do this when you can just do a drum rack and it does it for you already?
definately eq-ing in a bit more depth and maybe some like underground effects like the one is brought up in a topic. it sounds like a vinyl deck is being switched off, things like that if you can howie
How to look like Earl Hickey:)
I would love to see some of the other ableton live suite instruments being used since I was stupid and bought them instead of a sylenth >< mabey collision or tension but cant wait either way!
yes Ableton instruments - operator for one
hey there i would like to request a tutorial if it isn’t much trouble
a tutorial on synthesis, i know a bit of how to tweak a synth but not enough to make a major change on the sound,
it would be awesome if i learned how to make my own presets or sounds from scratch
thanks
big low fat thick Techno bass.
like the artists on CLR.
A tutorial on the various sub toms. phat bass. and big kicks used by the artists of CLR ?
That would be excellent . i’d donate for something like that …
Cheerz
Cush.
@ cushdj +1 … i would love too see tutorials on sub toms … thick bass … techno basslines … arrangement an stuff
For me I struggle to develop tunes from ideas, maybe a tutorial on how you go about developing a track based on a basic idea. Not sure I’ve explained what I’m talking about to well.
Would love to see some quick fire tutes on each of Lives Audio effects, a bit like the SA tech tips for us noobs

Here is your tutorial…
-open your synth up.
-turn knobs
-notice changes
-write them down (optional)
-repeat
That is how you learn synthesis. There is no shortcuts to learning how to make your own sounds.

This I could do.
I would mainly do tutorials on Ableton Live. I’ll leave the creativity stuff to SA. This is more along the technical side of things.
